JURASSIC WORLD: CAMP CRETACEOUS

The stakes are even higher for season two of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous as the campers have to navigate for their lives on Isla Nublar

Back to tourist-unfriendly Isla Nublar for more animated dino-thrills.

AS A LONG-TIME WRITER FOR kids’ animation and a huge fan of Jurassic Park, showrunner Scott Kreamer is living his best life writing the Netflix original animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Not only does it follow the canon of the franchise laid down by executive producers Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow, but as the first season proved, this isn’t some watered-down story featuring cute dinosaurs. Its kid campers, who are stranded on Isla Nublar during the same happenings of Jurassic World, are ravaged by the dinos and even seemingly lose one of their own.

“Us dropping Ben [voiced by Sean Giambrone] off the monorail – forget about it,” Kreamer says to Red Alert about how other kid-centric animation series would react to their season one cliffhanger.

“We have people getting eaten! We have Darius [Paul-mikél Williams] dealing with the trauma of his father. You just don’t normally get to tell these stories in kids’ animation.”

Season two has just debuted on Netflix with eight new episodes, as the campers find themselves abandoned on Isla Nublar by all the escaping adults. Kreamer says it’s their Swiss Family Robinson season. “Shelter, water, food, staying alive – these were all the things that we really tried to get into the head of the kids. What would it be like to try to stay alive until rescue comes?”

Mostly, it means trying not to get eaten or stomped on by the genetically enhanced dinos of the now destroyed tourist park. And that means some quality time with the “King of the Dinosaurs” – the Tyrannosaurus rex. “I wanted to get the T-rex in there,” Kreamer says of his goal to amp up its presence this season. “Because of how the Jurassic World film plays out [in season one], we couldn’t do it. We talked about ways to maybe force it into the eighth episode, but it just didn’t feel right. So, I really wanted to put the T-rex more front and centre this season.”

And there are other additions. “The writers’

room was covered with maps of Isla Nublar, as well as dinosaur pictures and dinosaur facts,” Kreamer shares. “Now we’re getting into dinosaurs like the Baryonyx, which is coollooking and fierce, and the Ceratosaurus.”

While still remaining within the franchise’s established canon, Kreamer says that the end of season two potentially opens up a lot of freedom in their storytelling if they get a third season. “The opening sequence of Fallen Kingdom takes place six months after the Jurassic World movie, and the rest of the movie takes place three years later, so we have some time.” TB

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is streaming on Netflix now.
