Director Adam Stovall

Cast Natalie Walker,

Macleod Andrews, Amanda Miller

True love is hard to find – have you been on Tinder lately? But down-on-his-luck Jack (Macleod Andrews) may have found it in the most unlikely place of all: a haunted house. Tasked with cleaning a property before its sale, Jack encounters the ghost of Muriel (Natalie Walker). After the initial terror subsides they strike up an unlikely friendship, but their growing attachment could have disastrous consequences for Muriel.

Adam Stovall’s directorial debut makes the most of its (very) limited resources to tell a heartfelt and very funny love story with a couple of twists. Andrews and Walker are both excellent, their characters carrying a weight of sadness that’s unexpectedly lifted when they are together. There are also amusing echoes of A Matter Of Life And Death and Monsters, Inc. in the depiction of a bureaucratic afterlife.

It’s short and snappy at just 79 minutes, and that leads to a few pacing issues – some aspects of the final act don’t feel entirely earned. Still, these are small gripes. A haunting horror-comedy that charms as well as chills.

Extras Three audio commentaries (Stovall; Stovall and Andrews; various cast and crew); a video essay; eight interviews with cast and crew; outtakes; an interview and Q&A with Stovall from a Frightfest screening. Plus: gallery; trailer; Easter eggs. Will Salmon
