The Monster Fun Halloween Spooktacular will send a chill down your funny bone
AFTER LAST YEAR’S COR!! BUSTER EASTER Special, the Treasury Of British Comics is celebrating the spooky season with the Monster Fun Halloween Spooktacular Special. Taking its name from IPC’S 1970s humour horror weekly, the 48-pager features appearances from the likes of Frankie Stein, Kid Kong, Draculass, Gums, Teddy Scare and Hire a Horror.
“What better title to release at Halloween than Monster Fun?” says Treasury editor Keith Richardson. “It’s good to do a comic with one core theme running throughout and this title tells new readers exactly what to expect.”
Kek-w and Lew Stringer are reviving Wiz War, which centres around a pair of feuding magicians and which was first published in the late ’60s in Pow! and Smash!. “Lew and I are from the same generation and grew up reading all those wonderful British Silver Age comics, which inspired and fed into my work as much as early Marvel Comics and Wally Wood,” recalls Kek-w.
“I’d read Smash! back in the day and when I had the chance to reboot Wiz War with Lew, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I’m probably best known in the UK for doing horror, sci-fi and fantasy, but I really love doing flat-out silly gag strips!”
Meanwhile Simon Furman is teaming up with artist Laurent Lefeuvre to return The Leopard From Lime Street to his youthful roots. “We’re doing a more traditional story, which could have followed on from the Leopard’s original Buster strip,” explains Furman. “We’re setting it in the classic Selbridge environs, and featuring characters from the original strip, which we’re very respectful to.” SJ
Monster Fun Halloween Spooktacular is available from 22 September.
