The Royal Mel­bourne Show is fast ap­proach­ing, with the live­stock com­pe­ti­tion high­light be­ing the Supreme Cham­pion Texel Ram or Ewe class.

With judg­ing start­ing on Septem­ber 22 and tak­ing place across 11 days, the Royal Mel­bourne Show sheep, beef car­case, dairy cat­tle and beef cat­tle com­pe­ti­tions have at­tracted a com­bined 3500 en­tries.

In cel­e­bra­tion of the breed’s 25th year in Aus­tralia, the sheep com­pe­ti­tion wel­comes the Texel as the 2018 fea­ture breed.

Eighty Texel sheep will com­pete for the chance to be de­clared the Supreme Cham­pion Texel ram or ewe in what will be an out­stand­ing dis­play of elite Texel ge­net­ics.

What is con­sid­ered the high­light of the pro­gram, the in­ter­breed com­pe­ti­tion will be­gin at 3 pm on Sun­day, Septem­ber 23, show­cas­ing the best sheep in the 2018 show.

The beef car­case com­pe­ti­tion has grown sub­stan­tially in 2018 with al­most 200 head of cat­tle and 300 sec­ondary and ter­tiary stu­dents par­tic­i­pat­ing in the com­pe­ti­tion.

The All Breeds Elite Dairy Heifer Show and Dairy Youth Han­dlers Clas­sic, held on Thurs­day, Septem­ber 27, will of­fer ex­hibitors the op­por­tu­nity to show­case some of the best dairy ge­net­ics in the coun­try and com­pete for the ti­tle of Supreme Cham­pion Pa­rader.

Con­clud­ing the pro­ceed­ings dur­ing the fi­nal four days of the show is the beef cat­tle com­pe­ti­tion.

This year’s fea­ture breed is red poll, and 80 an­i­mals will be com­pet­ing in the largest dis­play of the breed at Royal Mel­bourne Show in more than 20 years.

The beef cat­tle com­pe­ti­tion will con­clude with the in­ter­breed, this year to be held at 5 pm on Mon­day, Oc­to­ber 1.
