Corporate game challenge

ORGANISATIONS ENCOURAGED TO GET TEAMS TOGETHER TO COMPETE IN TRADITIONAL INDIGENOUS GAME

Shepparton News - - NEWS - By Tara Whitsed

Goulburn Valley organisations are encouraged to sign up for this year’s annual ASHE Corporate Bourinjin Challenge.

ASHE staff member and challenge co-ordinator Jamie Atkinson said organisations could get teams of six to 10 players together to compete in the traditional indigenous game.

‘‘It’s a fast game that is traditional to the Kabi Kabi people of northern Queensland,’’ he said.

Mr Atkinson said ASHE had developed its own style about 10 years ago, which allowed secondary school students to participate in the game each year for ASHE Fest.

‘‘We changed it to the ASHE way, which incorporates goals,’’ he said.

The event will raise funds through team registration fees to support ASHE’s Aboriginal Nursing Scholarship Program which is run in conjunction with La Trobe University’s Shepparton Campus.

‘‘Teams entering will be asked to complete the attached registration form and provide information in regards to the invoice of $200 for team registration,’’ Mr Atkinson said.

‘‘Each team can have up to 10 players competing in the tournament and must provide a first-aid person per team.’’

Mr Atkinson said they’d had good success with the challenge in the past and it helped raise awareness of indigenous culture in the workplace as well as supporting a great cause in education.

‘‘It is a fun and healthy way for you to be involved on the court with your co-workers/supervisors for a few hours,’’ he said.

● The challenge will be played on Friday, November 23 from 10 am to 1.30 pm at Shepparton Sports Stadium. For more details and to get a registration form phone Jamie Atkinson on 5823 6600 or email jamie.atkinson@unimelb.edu.au Registration closes on Friday, November 16.
