Lander due to arrive

NASA’s first robotic lander, designed to study the deep interior of a distant world, was due to arrive at Mars about 7 am today.

The lander has spent almost seven months travelling through space and had a wild ride to the surface, plummeting through the atmosphere at more than 19 000 km an hour.

The mission of the InSight lander is to measure the temperature of the red planet and listen for any earthquakes or ‘mars-quakes’, which can help scientists to understand more about the interior of the planet.
