Refugee advocate speaks at city event
Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre executive director and human rights lawyer David Manne will speak in Shepparton today.
The event will be hosted by Shepparton initiative Hijack’d as part of its Nourish the Conversation series.
Hijack’d’s Betul Tuna said Mr Manne was at the forefront of defending the rights, dignity and lives of asylum seekers, refugees and disadvantaged migrants.
Mr Manne has worked in various capacities assisting refugees and asylum seekers for more than 20 years.
During his extensive career, Mr Manne has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Law Institute of Victoria Paul Baker Prize for Administrative and Human Rights Law, the Law Institute President’s Awards (2006 and 2011), and was shortlisted for the Australian Human Rights Commission Human Rights Medal in 2011. ● Ms Tuna encouraged the community to attend the free event in the Queen’s Gardens today from 6.30 pm.
