Tiny, Weagle go viral

-

Oddie came across these pictures which were posted by former News journo Peter Russell who had been reminiscing about the story over lunch with the subject Ron (Tiny) Harrison.

Peter said the photos were taken in the 1980s at Tiny’s property in Congupna and, in the pre-internet world, the images of him in uniform with his ‘‘pet’’ wedge-tailed eagle, ‘‘Weagle’’, went viral, appearing in newspapers around the world.

Setting history in stone

This, from the minutes of a recent heritage committee meeting. The members received a briefing from Trevor Dainton on the Heritage Plaques Pilot Program.

Oddie is a fan of this initiative because history matters.

Oddie’s favourite plaque is in Bennett St, Bath, in the United Kingdom. It marks the home of Captain Arthur Phillip who commanded the First Fleet of convicts to Australia and was later the first governor of NSW.

Despite his adventurous and dangerous life, he settled peacefully in Bath where he was fond of sitting on the upstairs window with a cup of tea. On August 31, 1814, he toppled and fell to his death.

Cafe whispers abound

Oddie hears a whisper that the SAM Cafe could be heading in a different direction.

The council’s decision to run the cafe for a year to help out caused great consternation but there may yet be an outcome that doesn’t involve ratepayers footing the bill.

A bit of Tokyo in Shepp

Oddie was barred, along with everyone else, from going to Tokyo to see some sport and splurge on sashimi, so this news from Stockdale & Leggo Shepparton lifted the spirits.

‘‘@okamirestaurant is coming to Shepparton! We are pleased to welcome this much-loved

franchise to town. Okami will be located at 111 Fryers St, the perfect location set amongst our other bustling food hot spots!’’

Warms your heart like a bowl of miso soup.

What are they planning in there?

Oddie doesn’t like secrets so this item stood out in the subject headings for a recent councillor briefing session: ‘Confidential Development Proposal’.

What could it be? What are they planning in there? Oddie is all ears.
