Love comes up short at Sandown

- By Meg Saultry

Rhys Archard’s Super Quick Love showed again she can be super quick at Ladbrokes Park Lakeside on Wednesday — although her fast finish ultimately came a fraction too late.

Contesting the $50,000 BM70 over 2100m, Super Quick Love finished a nose behind winner Diaquin after finishing hard in the final 300m.

But the Nigel Blackiston-trained mare, coming from midfield, also lifted to hold off SQL on the line.

A win would have made it three consecutive victories for SQL, after she saluted at Mildura on July 24 and August 9.

Coming from last to first in those races, it looked like the mare was about to do it all again at Sandown after racing midfield for most of the event before kicking into gear.

A third place finish to Michael Cornish and Donna Gaskintrained Coralist was the best result among local trainers at Thursday’s Echuca races.

The four-year-old mare ran wide in the $35,000 Murphy’s Turf & Landscaping Maiden Plate over 1100m, but kept coming to finish 1.35 lengths behind winner Signor Fangio.

It was Coralist’s seventh start, with a second and third her best results.

Among the Cornish-Gaskin stable’s other results was an eighthplaced finish for O’whatapicture in the $35,000 Moama Bowling Club Maiden Plate over 1300m, while Sandover finished last in the Echuca CIH Sales & Service Maiden Plate over 1300m.

Daryl Archard’s Barmah Al ran in ninth in the BM64 Handicap over 2100m after leading early.

Damian Lane finished with a riding double.

● Echuca-trained Grey Raptor broke her maiden at Berrigan on Saturday, August 21.

Running in the $9800 Robbie Saunders Memorial Maiden Handicap over 1400m, the Tayne Fostertrained mare finished 1.2 lengths ahead of the field to claim her maiden victory at her eighth start.

With a starting price of $41 Grey Raptor beat the favourites If You Say So ($2.70) and Red Cascade ($2).
