Ben to lead as mane man of Lions pride

- By Aydin Payne

With the future looking bright at Kings Park it was an easy decision to recommit for next year according to Ben Davey.

Seymour announced at the weekend that Davey, who led the outfit to third spot on the ladder, had re-signed as senior coach.

The Lions enjoyed a sublime year, one where they went undefeated for nine games and occupied top spot on the ladder up until the final round.

The decision will have Davey steer the Goulburn Valley League outfit into a third season, after he joined ahead of 2020.

Davey, who has coaching experience with North Melbourne and the Murray Bushrangers, said he was over the moon to remain at the helm for next year.

“I was always keen to sign on again, it’s a very exciting time,” Davey said.

“We have an extremely young team; we had 13 first-gamers and the average age of the team each week was 22 years.

“It is a real credit to the group for how strong and tight they are and the other good thing is that they want to get better, which is very exciting for the club.”

Davey said the playing group was determined to give next year’s season another red-hot crack after missing out on the chance to play finals.

The league was forced to cancel the remainder of the season last week due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“They (playing group) aren’t happy with the way the season has ended, they wanted to play finals like everyone else,” Davey said.

“As we have learned over the past 18 months there are plenty of things out of your control. It’s like when an umpiring decision doesn’t go your way. There is no point mulling over it, we have just got to move on.”

The Lions senior premiership player said he was looking forward to building on the club’s off-field success next year.

“We really want to make the club an important part of the community. A place where locals could feel welcomed and somewhere they want to be around,” Davey said.

“The club plays a major role on the community and we saw that this year with some big crowds down at Kings Park when we could have spectators in.”
