Carnival of fun

ST BRENDAN’S STUDENTS SHOW SKILLS VIRTUALLY AT SPORTS DAY

- By Georgia Rossiter

Instead of cancelling the athletics carnival while in lockdown, staff at Shepparton’s St Brendan’s Primary School decided to host the annual sports day virtually on Friday.

Students competed in events in their backyards with family cheering them on, and occasional demonstrations from PE teacher Josh Wild.

‘‘We had a lot of help from all the other teachers and it was great to see the involvement from all the students,’’ he said.

The day started with a Google Class Meet in the morning with students in their sports house colours to encourage everyone to get involved in the activities throughout the day.

The school was then split up into separate Google Meetings for each year level and the students competed in the events in their backyards.

While the running events were simple to take part in from the backyard, events like high jump and shotput required some creative thinking to replicate.

‘‘Some of them were really creative with a few of the things they did,’’ Mr Wild said.

‘‘Some of them made their own shotput out of a balloon and then filled it with rice, they used toilet rolls as markers for high jump and we had triple jump and long jump.’’

Deputy principal Sally Mills said the decision to host the event online was to give the students a fun day in lockdown.

‘‘We decided to facilitate this event to provide something positive for the students to participate in for their health and wellbeing,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s been a great success, and we’re very proud of our school community.’’

The McAuley House captains Lara Magill and Xavier Waters led their house to victory, while Savio House, captained by Charlotte Stevens and Mitchell Mann, claimed the spirit award.
