‘Heartbreaking’ for Shepp Show, a no-go
The 145th Shepparton Agricultural Show has been cancelled for 2021, the second year in a row.
The annual show was set to be held on October 8 and 9 at the Shepparton Showgrounds, but due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 restrictions and general safety, it has been cancelled.
Shepparton Agricultural Society president Sue Trevaskis said the decision was “absolutely heartbreaking”.
“We were really hopeful, but unfortunately the last fortnight has shown it’s just not possible,” she said.
The show is one for the whole family, known for its wide array of exhibitions from farm animals to local art displays, and carnival rides for the thrill seekers.
The city will stand to lose some revenue from the boost to the local economy the show usually brings, as it draws crowds from across the state.
With the show’s cancellation also comes a flow-on effect for local vendors and artists not being able to exhibit and sell their works.
There’s still hope for next year’s show in a COVID-safe setting, but for this year the uncertainty surrounding future snap lockdowns and the general safety risk for show-goers was simply too great.
“First and foremost is the health of the community — we don’t want to be responsible for another outbreak,” Ms Trevaskis said.
