No crowd call made for Benalla
A milestone marker on Benalla Racing Club’s calendar — the Benalla Gold Cup — will be without spectators this year.
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions across Victoria, last week the club announced the decision, albeit with a forced hand, to make the event open to essential personnel only.
The race day will go ahead as scheduled on September 24.
“We’ve left it as late as possible to make a final call, but with arranging all personnel for the day, marquees and catering in particular, we’ve just run out of time,” club chief executive Cam Symes said.
“We wanted to inform our members, sponsors and racegoers as early as possible, so they could plan their day.”
A statement released by the club declared ticket holders who had booked in advance would be refunded in full, and indicated the club was hopeful of welcoming patrons back to attend the Living Here Christmas Races on December 18.
