Honour for Demons great

LYON TO PRESENT PREMIERSHIP CUP IF MELBOURNE WINS

- By Tyler Maher

Kyabram product Garry Lyon already has plenty of Melbourne Football Club history to his name.

A club captain, two-time bestand-fairest winner and three-time All Australian for the Demons, Lyon also sits 14th on the club’s all-time games played list and fourth on the goal-kicking tally.

Add in a spot in Melbourne’s Team of the Century and Hall of Fame and it is clear that Lyon bleeds red and blue.

But if the club breaks a premiership drought which stretches back to 1964 when it takes on the Western Bulldogs in this year’s AFL grand final, Lyon will add another line to his long list of Melbourne highlights — presenting the cup to the victorious squad.

Chris Grant is on hand to present the cup if the Bulldogs take the crown at Optus Stadium.

“(It was) a lovely, special moment for me yesterday when I got asked and (it’s) beyond my wildest dreams, I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do something like this if it was to come about,” Lyon told Fox Sports.

“I’m sure Chris Grant and I are having the same sort of thoughts here whether or not we get that opportunity.

“We’re a tiny part of it, but to play a little role in it would be unbelievable, it’d be the same for Granty.

“Just to be here is a real privilege, I keep saying it and I mean it. I know so many players, former players and families are all at home, supporters and fans that I’ve known for many, many, many years that would love the opportunity, so we’ll just be representing them.”

Lyon is in Perth through his media commitments with Fox Footy.
