Bomb scare in Kyabram

VICTORIA POLICE BOMB SQUAD DETONATES SUSPICIOUS DEVICE FOUND IN MAILBOX

- By Myles Peterson

Victoria Police’s bomb squad detonated an improvised explosive device in Kyabram yesterday just before 6 pm.

The bomb squad was called to Kyabram earlier yesterday to deactivate a suspicious device left in a mailbox. A loud bang was reported, and no-one was injured in the controlled blast.

The roads around the Thompson Lane property were cordoned off about lunchtime yesterday after a homeowner discovered the suspicious device which resembled a pipe bomb, Leading Senior Constable Brad Carroll said.

‘‘We are taking all due caution with the device and the public are advised to avoid the area until the matter has been dealt with,’’ Leading Sen Constable Carroll said.

An advance member of the bomb squad team appeared before 3 pm and conducted an evaluation of the site, liaising with on-duty police.

The remainder of the threeperson bomb squad team arrived about 3.10 pm and began sealing off the mailbox with sandbags supplied by SES before sending in a robot to X-ray the device.
