Man remanded over spate of charges

CAR STOLEN IN ALLEGED HOME INVASION INVOLVED IN POLICE CHASE

A car stolen during an alleged home invasion at Yarrawonga early on Sunday morning was later involved in a police chase in Shepparton.

Cobram Crime Investigat­ion Unit’s Senior Constable Phil Armstrong alleged an 84-yearold man was assaulted when he confronted three males who had entered his Yarrawonga home early on Sunday.

Police allege the men stole the homeowner’s Volkswagen Golf sedan some time about 12.50 am.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Shepparton police later spotted the car on the Shepparton Katamatite Rd just north of Shepparton and tried to intercept it, but it didn’t stop, Sen Constable Armstrong said.

There was a police pursuit through Shepparton, involving at least three police cars, police said.

Police deployed tyredeflat­ion tactics and followed the car into Shepparton where it stopped in Field St. Three males f led the vehicle. One was arrested nearby, while police investigat­ions into the other two remain ongoing.

A 19-year-old Congupna man has been charged with home invasion, aggravated burglary, robbery, theft of a vehicle, intentiona­lly and recklessly causing injury and assault in company.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in Shepparton Magistrate­s’ Court in January.
