Shepparton News

Things have been fairly quiet around the club as it has lost its greenkeeper and is now seeking out new ways to maintain the standard of the greens that bowlers have become accustomed to playing on.

Many thanks to Rob Dennis who has worked tirelessly over the past years to bring the green to its present standard.

Rob now lives 10 minutes out of Rochester and it is only logical that he should play there.

He has travelled more than 350 km each week to work on the green. Merrigum wishes him all the best at his new club and hopes he will always have a warm spot for the club. Each Thursday we have a working bee at 10am and all members are urged to attend as we now have the challenge of the greens.

Even if you can’t contribute physically with the work to be done it still encouraging to see our members becoming involved.

Every Thursday pennant practice is held at 4pm and coaching is available to new members and members who wish to increase their skills. Saturday, October 16 pennant practice for all will be at 1pm.

You don’t have to stay for the whole session, but please come along and give the selectors some idea of who will be available for the new season.

The greens are open and looking good.

Practice is permitted in small groups, but beware of social distancing rules. Hopefully some serious bowls is not far away.

The draws have been done and are posted on the noticeboard for the A and B-grade men’s singles, pairs and mixed pairs.

Dates have not been finalised as yet and will depend on COVID-19 restrictions.

The women’s draws will be finalised once restrictions allow play. Make sure your entry fees have been paid before playing.

Sunday, October 31 has been set aside for the playing of club events pending the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

All three greens will be available with fills at 9 am, noon and 3 pm. Players will just need to organise opponents, a marker and book a timeslot on the notice board. Entry forms for state events are also on the noticeboard for those interested.

The start of the 60-and-over competition has had to be delayed.

The projected starting date is now Wednesday, November 17 at Tatura. A possible start for pennant competitions is now Saturday, November 6, while for midweek it is Tuesday, November 9.

Wednesday social bowls/night pennant will commence as soon as we are able to play.

Games start at 6.45pm and are completed by 8.45pm.

A great evening.

Entries are looking good and phone Angelo Russo on 0414 476 206 if you would like to play.

The mixed pairs tournament was to be held on Sunday, October 17. Obviously this will not happen now and hopefully it can be rescheduled later in the year.

Club events — Championship singles, B-grade singles, club championship pairs, draws have been done and are on the notice board. Hopefully when the COVID-19 rules are relaxed these events can be played.

Some club events are still to be closed off.

Entries can be phoned to Ivan on 0409 211 025, Dennis on

0407 845 767 or Kevin on

0439 332 268.

Check notice board.

Event entries will close mostly for these events on October 21. Pennant practice has commenced and we would like to see as many as possible at Tuesday and Thursday training.

Thursday night training is compulsory, for all players who would like to play division one and division two this season.

If you cannot train on a Thursday night, please inform one of the selectors.

Midweek players training will start this Thursday (today) at 4pm prior to the Saturday players ’ training session.
