Content Newman works on bolstering Bombers’ midfield
Kyabram Football Club is currently in talks with an A-grade midfielder to bolster its ranks for next season.
Coach Paul Newman said the player was a friend and former Coburg teammate of Kyabram’s gun 2021 recruit and the Bombers’ best-and-fairest winner Zac Keogh.
“He has been playing in the ACT and is an elite player who would bolster our midfield with Mick (Mattingly) and Axel (Childs) now gone,” Newman said.
But Newman stressed there would be no emphasis on heavy recruiting over the summer months despite several departures from the 2019 premiership side.
Childs is the latest departure, announcing last week he is joining Sam Sheldon who has been appointed coach of Murray Football League club Moama.
Newman said Sheldon’s cousins Tom and Jack Sheldon had not made up their minds at this stage whether they would be joining Sam and Axel at Moama or remain with the Bombers where they have been premiership players.
“We don’t think we have to recruit heavily. We have still got a lot of local talent to work with,” Newman said.
Offsetting some of the departures has already been compensated by the return of 2019 premiership heroes Jake Reeves and Tom Holman.
Newman said Lancaster star Zac Cerrone was also keen to try out with the Bombers and had committed himself to that challenge, while Cerrone’s teammate James Ross, who was third in this year’s McNamara Medal, is also showing interest in trying out at a higher standard.
