50 die as truck overturns
KINSHASA: At least 50 people are said to have died after a freight truck, carrying ‘‘illegal’’ passengers, overturned and plunged into a river in the Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities have said.
The accident occurred near the village of Tambo in the mineral-rich southern province of Haut-Katanga. A spokesperson for the Haut-Katanga government, Joseph Kayumba, said on Tuesday that only two people had survived the accident and that divers were still searching for missing people in the Kalume Ngongo River.
