Have say on infrastructure

- By Georgia Rossiter

The Australian National University has invited Shepparton residents to voice their opinions on Australia’s $272 billion infrastructure rollout.

The interviews will be part of a major research investigation looking at the impact of major road, pipeline and other projects across the country.

ANU research director Professor Sara Bice said they were looking for feedback about construction works such as the Goulburn Valley Hwy Shepparton Bypass, the Shepparton rail line upgrade, and the Shepparton sewer upgrade.

Locally, researchers are also interested to hear what locals think about upgrades to Maude St Mall, Watt Rd bridge and the Deakin Reserve netball courts.

One of the aims of the study is to improve the rollout of infrastructure in the future.

“We’ve never seen a more intensive period of activity from local councils, state governments and the Federal Government in communities across Australia,” Prof Bice said.

“We’re really interested to know about the experiences of the local community members who are shouldering the burden of this nation-shaping infrastructure program.”

The Shepparton community is one of six across the country that has been invited to complete the survey, along with Geelong, Newcastle and other areas that have seen an infrastructure boom.

Prof Bice said the research would reveal what local communities thought about the role of infrastructure in the post-pandemic recovery.

“We believe social and health infrastructure will be important, but we want to know what the local voices think,” she said.

Community-project relationships will also be assessed as part of the research.

Prof Bice expects the findings to be published at the end of 2022.

“We would love people to give us 10 minutes of their time to tell us what they think,” she said.
