Hill Top Golf Club

-

Monday Hill Top members and visitors played a 4BBB sponsored by NL Drainage, before the event players enjoyed a combined barbecue cooked by Paul Kerrins and Ali Dellar, which was greatly appreciated by the golfers and bowlers.

In the women’s event Karen Ballantyne and Leanne Pyke came out winners with a very creditable 44 points from Kaye Huther and Francie Mark; in third place were Janette Hayward and Lois Rogers, 41. Balls down the line went to Rosemary Hepworth and Sheryl Curran, and Bec Jeffers and Marita Cornwall, 39 points on a countback. Nearest-the-pins: 3rd Kaye Huther, 6th Karen Ballantyne, 9th Jan Coe, 14th Bec Jeffers.

In the men’s event with an excellent score of 47 on a countback were Shorty McNaughton and David Cornwall from Ross Coulston and Mark Peacoulakis; in third place were Danyel Dryden and Dean Lombardozzi, 43.

Balls down the line were awarded to Paul Cornelius and Glen Clark, Richard Ballantyne and Damian Smith, Jody Webber and Bryan Miller, 42, and Brian Coe and Brady Bourke, 41. Nearest-the-pins: 3rd Peter Baird, 6th Daniel Maher, 9th Ryan O’Connor, 14th Damian Smith. Tuesday was a Stroke event with Linc Wellington taking out the event with a net 71 from John Dickinson, net 73. Ron Popple won a golf ball. The Thursday morning players played a Stableford event in trying conditions as the results show, with Graham Meneilly coming in first on a countback from Steve Allison and James Ibbotson, all with 33.

I believe that James’ golf cart broke down and instead of putting the switch into the tow position and simply pushing the cart they got the tractor and lifted and pushed the cart on to the trailer, hopefully with little damage. Ray Whitfield won the nearest-the-pin on the 9th. Thursday’s Chook Run Stroke event sponsored by Tatura IGA was won by Bushranger Peter Ned Fiddes with a net 37, which included a nine on his first hole, from wife Phyl, net 38, and Geoff Coolahan, net 38, on a countback; unfortunately for all the regular Thursday players Peter only lost one shot off his handicap; Peter also won the 14th nearest-the-pin. On Saturday the women and men played Stableford in heavy conditions after Friday night’s rain, which included the President vs Captain’s Day event.

Only three women played the women’s event with Phyl Fiddes winning with 29 points from Judy Baker, 24, and Jan Coe, 23. Nearest-the-pins: 9th Judy Baker, 14th Phyl Fiddes.

In the men’s event, A-grade winner was Steve Zolich with 37 points on a countback from Darren Carter, also with 37; B-grade winner was Leigh Thornton with 37 from Joshua McRae with 36; C-grade winner was John Steen with 34 points on a countback from Graham Smith. Balls down the line were awarded to Terry O’Brien, Ray Nicholson, 36, Tim Nicholson, 35, Ty Guiney, Peter Baird and Geoff Coolahan, 34 on a countback. Nearest-the-pins: 3rd Terry O’Brien (Lewis Homes), 6th Leigh Thornton (Tatura Post Office), 9th and jackpot Shorty McNaughton (Tatura Engineering), 14th Graham McIntosh (A1 Delivery Service). Sunday, May 1, Hill Top played a two-person Ambrose followed by an auction to raise funds for the NSW and Queensland flood victims with all proceeds from the day donated to Resilient Lismore: a volunteer group which prioritises and distributes 100 per cent of funds locally to where it is needed most.

With the golf entry fees and the auction, just under $15,000 was raised. What a fantastic effort. Thanks must go to Paul Newman and Drew Curtis and their helpers in organising the day and obtaining the auctioned items. Congratulations to Bec Jeffers and Glen Barrell Newton who won the Goulburn Murray Golf Association George Cronyn Memorial Handicap event played at the Kialla Golf Club. Next Saturday the men will be playing for the GMCU Monthly Medal and the women will be playing a Stroke event. – Bunkered
