Candidates challenged on matters that count

A group of women from diverse background­s is planning to question candidates in the seat of Nicholls on their stance on eight issues, or matters that count.

The Women’s Collective, along with the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District and the Victorian Women’s Trust, have combined to host the Matters That Count event on Wednesday, May 18, in Shepparton.

Candidates have been asked to outline their positions on eight national matters the organisati­ons consider crucial to the nation’s identity and future.

Those matters include action on climate change; a First Nations voice enshrined in the constituti­on; wage justice for women; stopping men's violence; affordable childcare for all families; affordable housing for older women; ending cruel treatment of asylum seekers; and integrity and accountabi­lity.

The candidates will then be invited to explain their views in a conversati­on with members of new and emerging communitie­s during the Matters That Count event.
