Hungry Bears, Tigers to scrap

- By Daniel Webb

Two of the competition’s premiership contenders will do battle in an enthralling weekend of Picola and District Netball League action.

Tungamah will play host to Katamatite on Saturday afternoon, with the game set to impact where each side finishes come season’s end.

It has been an interrupted start to the year for both teams, however that has not stopped the points flowing in, with both the Bears and the Tigers winning big in recent weeks.

Tungamah produced a solid 16-goal win over Blighty last week, while Katamatite was in fine form on the court, beating Tocumwal by 34.

Bears coach Jayanna Sharp said the side was keen to get the game under way.

“It only really feels like our third round after a couple of weeks off,” Sharp said.

“We’re just still trying a few combinations and trying to settle in but other than that we’re just ready to go.”

Sharp said she expected Katamatite to be strong both in attack and defence, with the Tigers traditionally putting up a fight in those areas.

“It will be good to see who they have and what kind of match-ups we can do on the day,” Sharp said.

With a couple of days to go until Saturday’s game, the Bears are yet to lock in their squad and with COVID-19 still very much a looming threat to preparations, Sharp was hoping her team could steer clear ahead of the big game.

“We’re hoping that (COVID-19) stays away from us and we have a full squad going in and can see what we can do I suppose,” Sharp said.

“Hopefully the girls maintain themselves and keep playing the game that they’ve been playing and they’ll be fine.”

In other Picola and District Netball League games this weekend, Picola United will welcome Katunga in what is shaping up to be a big day for the club.

United will be celebrating its heritage across the day, with the A-grade netball side to wear dresses with Indigenous designs that pay tribute to the proud history of First Nations families that have represented Picola United.

In Tocumwal, the Bloods will battle Jerilderie while Mathoura will take on the Deni Rovers and Strathmerton will play Blighty.

Katandra, Waaia and Rennie will all have a week off.
