STYLE AND sustainability

Monaco continues to dial up the glam quotient with pioneering new initiatives that remain committed to the principality’s sustainable ethos.

Sitting at Café de Paris Monte-Carlo, under the watch of its resplendent Belle Époque façade, one can imagine a young Prince Albert II sipping coffee here with his family, perhaps discussing the order of the day. Indeed, the beloved establishment has welcomed the French Riviera’s who’s who for more than 150 – in effortless, uncomplicated style.

The establishment closed to undergo a very Monaco facelift in 2019, and in early 2023 will reveal just how major the transformation has been, including the addition of two storeys that will house boutiques and fresh dining concepts – Latin American cuisine at second-floor Amazonico is set to steal the show.

The décor has been refreshed throughout, but it still nods to the seductive styles that have characterised it since the 1870s.

The cafe is the final touch in a much larger transformation program that has reimagined this postcard-pretty principality – it began with the makeover of legendary Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo, and culminated with One Monte-Carlo, a flashy shopping and dining precinct that spares no expense in the style stakes. Then there was the redesign of the Boulingrins Gardens and the greening of the Place du Casino, now enveloped by tall palms.

This commitment to the environment and sustainable design comes from all levels, with the principality committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55 per cent come 2030. Accommodation like Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Hotel Hermitage MonteCarlo, Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, and Monte-Carlo Beach have all kept pace, with all four certified Green Globe hotels – Café de Paris and the dreamy Thermes Marins have achieved the same status.

Food is organic where possible, and there’s an overarching commitment to keeping things local. In a travel world where we are ever-more aware of the footprint we leave, Monaco may just steal the show. montecarlosbm.com
