FISHERMAN’S SWEATER

Dive into Fran Morgan’s classic ribbed sweater and immerse yourself in deep ocean colours.

This casual sweater is oh-so comfortabl­e to wear, but it looks pretty chic, too. The textured stitch pattern lends it a style all its own, and the tipped contrast edges add a bright colour pop to the classic silhouette. You’ll wonder what you ever did without it.

NOTES

The Body and Sleeves are both worked in the round to the armholes.

BODY

Using a 4mm hook and Yarn B, ch200 (220: 240: 260), ss to first ch to join into a ring, taking care not to twist the chain.

Foundation round Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc into second ch from hook, ch1, skip next ch, *dc into next ch, ch1, skip next ch; rep from * to end of round, ss to first dc. [200 (220: 240: 260) sts] Change to Yarn A.

Round 1 Ch1, dc into first dc, ch1, skip next ch-sp, *dc into next dc, ch1, skip next ch-sp; rep from * to end of round, ss to first dc. Round 1 sets pattern.

Work 8 more rounds of Round 1. Change to 5mm hook.

Continue working in patt as set until Body measures 38cm.

Leave aside for Yoke.

SLEEVES MAKE 2

Using a 4mm hook and Yarn B, ch50 (50: 54: 58), ss to first ch to join into a ring, taking care not to twist the chain. Foundation round Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc into second ch from hook, ch1, skip next ch, *dc into next ch, ch 1, skip next ch; rep from * to end of round, ss to first dc.

Change to Yarn A.

Round 1 Ch1, dc into first dc, ch1, skip next ch-sp, *dc into next dc, ch1, sk next ch sp; rep from * to end of round, ss to first dc. Rep Round 1 for patt from now on. Work 8 more rounds.

Change to 5mm hook.

SLEEVE INCREASES

Round 1 (Inc round) Ch1, dc into first dc, ch1, dc into next ch-sp, ch1, *dc into next dc, ch1, skip next ch-sp; rep from * to end

of round, ss to first st of round.

[52 (52: 56: 60) sts]

Patt 5 (3: 3: 3) rounds.

Rep the last 6 (4: 4: 4) rounds 9 (12: 14: 15) more times. [70 (76: 84: 90)] sts. Repeat Round 1 once more.

[72 (78: 86: 92)] sts.

Cont without shaping until Sleeve measures 49 (49: 49: 52)cm.

Fasten off the first Sleeve, do not fasten off after finishing second Sleeve.

JOINING SLEEVES TO BODY

Using a 5mm hook and Yarn A, starting with second Sleeve (this will be the left Sleeve), ss across first 5 (5: 7: 7) sts, ch1 (mark this ch-sp), skip next ch-sp on Sleeve, dc in next dc, patt across 60 (66: 70: 6) sts which will end on a dc st, skip the last 5 (5: 7: 7) sts of sleeve.

On the Body: skip the first 5 (5: 7: 7) sts of Body, ch1 (mark this ch-sp), skip next ch-sp on Body, dc in next dc, patt across 88 (98: 104: 114) sts which will end on a dc st. On the second Sleeve: skip first 5 (5: 7: 7) sts of second Sleeve, ch1 (mark this ch-sp), skip next ch-sp on Sleeve, dc in next st on Sleeve, patt across 60 (66: 70: 76) sts which will end on a dc st, skip next 10 (10: 14: 14) sts of Body, ch1 (mark this ch-sp), skip next ch-sp on Body, dc in next dc, patt across next 88 (98: 104: 114) sts which will end on a dc st, ss into first marked ch-sp of round on Sleeve.

Ss into next dc to make this the new start of the round.

Work in patt for 1 round, moving markers up in all following rounds.

YOKE DECREASES

Round 1 Ch1, work in patt for 1 round.

Round 2 Ch1, *dc in next dc, skip next ch-sp, dc into next dc and cont working in patt until 2 dc before next marked ch-sp, dc in next dc, skip next ch-sp, dc in next dc, ch1 (this is the marked sp); rep from * 3 more times, ss to first dc of round.

Round 3 Ch1, dc in each dc st and ch1 above each ch-1 sp, keeping the stitch count and patt of the previous round.

Round 4 Ch1, *dc in next dc, skip next (dc, ch1) ch1, cont working in patt until ch-sp before next marked ch-sp, ch1, skip next (ch1, dc) dc in next dc, ch1 (this is the marked sp); rep from * 3 more times, ss to first dc of round. [288 (320: 340: 372)sts] Rep the last 4 rounds, 3 (2: 1: 0) times more. [240 (288: 324: 372)sts]

Next round Work as Round 2 of Yoke Decreases. [232 (280: 316: 364)sts] Next round Work as Round 4 of Yoke Decreases. [224 (272: 308: 356)sts] Rep the last 2 rounds 6 (9: 11: 14) times more. [128 (128: 132: 132)sts]

NECKLINE

In the following rounds, continue decreasing by 8 sts each round at the markers in the patt as set.

Round 1 Work in patt as Round 2 of Yoke Decreases, but ss across the centre 12 sts of the Front.

[120 (120: 124: 124) sts including ss]

Round 2 Work in patt as Round 4 of Yoke Decreases, but break the yarn 3 sts before the central 12 sts. Rejoin the yarn 3 sts after the central ss and continue in patt to end of round. [94 (94: 98: 98) working sts, 18 central unworked sts]

Round 3 Work in patt with decreases at markers as set, but break the yarn 2 sts before the central sts. Rejoin the yarn 2 sts after the central sts and continue in patt to end of round. [82 (82: 86: 86) working sts] Rep the last round twice more. [58 (58: 62: 62) working sts and 30 unworked sts] Change to Yarn A.

Work 2 more in rounds in patt without shaping in every st, including the unworked sts, around the neckline.

TO FINISH

Sew the sts together under each armhole. Weave in ends.
