Hook this de­light­ful mer­maid and add some sum­mer hap­pi­ness to your world. De­signed by Ilaria Caliri.

You know sum­mer’s here when mer­maids come out to play! This fierce lit­tle lady, with her li­lac hair and turquoise tail, is a quick project to keep your hooky fin­gers happy this week­end.

NOTES

The pat­tern is worked us­ing the amigurumi method. Work in a con­tin­u­ous spi­ral with­out clos­ing off the round with a ss. It may help to use a stitch marker in the last stitch of each round, mov­ing it up as you work.

HEAD AND BODY

Us­ing Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a st) 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]

Round 3 (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 (2dc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times. [24 sts]

Rounds 5-9 Dc in each st around.

Round 10 (Dc2­tog, dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times. [18 sts]

In­sert the safety eyes be­tween Rounds 8 and 9, ap­prox 6 sts apart.

Round 11 (Dc2­tog) 9 times. [9 sts]

Round 12 Dc in each st around.

Round 13 2dc in each st around. [18 sts] Stuff the Head firmly and con­tinue stuff­ing as you go.

Rounds 14-19 Dc in each st around. Change to Yarn B.

Rounds 20-23 Dc in each st around.

Round 24 (Dc2­tog, dc in each of next 7 sts) twice. [16 sts]

Round 25 Dc in each of next 2 sts, htr in each of next 2 sts, tr2­tog, htr in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 8 sts. [15 sts]

Round 26 Dc in next st, htr in each of next 2 sts, tr2­tog, htr in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 8 sts. [14 sts]

Round 27 (Dc2­tog, dc in each of next 5 sts) twice. [12 sts]

Round 28 (Dc2­tog, dc in each of next 4 sts) twice. [10 sts]

Round 29 (Dc2­tog, dc in each of next 3 sts) twice. [8 sts]

Pinch the edges of the tail to­gether and on next row in­sert the hook into both lay­ers.

Row 30 Ch1 (not counted as a st), dc in each of next 4 sts, turn. [4 sts]

Row 31 (5ch, htr in third ch from hook, tr in each of next 2 ch, skip 1 st from the pre­vi­ous row, ss in next st) twice.

Fas­ten off and weave in ends.

Sew the two shell se­quins onto the Mer­maid’s ch­est. ARMS (MAKE 2)

Us­ing Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a st), 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]

Rounds 2-6 Dc in each st around, ss in next st, do not stuff.

Fas­ten off, leav­ing a long tail end for sewing. Sew each Arm to the Body.

BELT

Us­ing Yarn C, ch23.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in sec­ond ch from hook, 2tr in next ch, dc in each of next 18 ch, 2tr in next ch, dc in last ch. [24 sts]

Fas­ten off, leav­ing a long tail end for sewing. Sew the Belt around the Mer­maid’s waist be­tween Rounds 19 and 20.

HAIR

Us­ing Yarn D, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a st), 6dc into the loop. [6 sts]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]

Round 3 (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 (2dc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 5 (2dc in next st, dc in each of next 7 sts) 3 times. [27 sts]

Round 6 Dc in each st around.

Turn and work in rows, with the row ends cre­at­ing the front hair part­ing.

Rows 7-9 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Fas­ten off, leav­ing a long tail end for sewing. Sew the Hair onto the Head, us­ing the photo as a guide and plac­ing the hair part­ing slightly off-cen­tre at front. Place the gold se­quins around the Hair and sew in place with left­over yarn from the Belt.

The head­dress, made of golden se­quins sewn to­gether, is the mer­maid’s crown­ing glory.
