For summer cool and elegant style, you can’t go wrong with a short-sleeved, boxy cardigan. This one features an openwork stitch pattern and is hooked in Rowan Softyak yarn, which is static-resistant and anti-microbial. This versatile cardigan will suit almost any shape, and it’ll earn its keep by looking fabulous with both the scruffiest of jeans and posh dresses. Done.

BACK

Ch113 (123: 133: 143: 153).

Row 1 (RS) Dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc into each ch to end, turn.

[112 (122: 132: 142: 152) sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc into each dc to end, turn. Repeat (Row 2) 13 times more, ending with WS facing for next row.

Row 16 (WS) Ch3 (counts as a tr throughout), tr into next dc, *ch3, skip 3 dc, tr into next 2 dc; rep from * to end, turn. [22 (24: 26: 28: 30)] pattern reps.

Row 17 (RS) Ch3, skip next tr, *5tr into next ch sp**, skip 2 tr; rep from * to end, ending last rep at **, skip tr, tr into last tr, turn.

Row 18 Ch3, tr into next tr, *ch3, skip 3 tr, tr into next 2 tr; rep from * to end, turn. These 2 rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until back measures 54 (56: 58: 60: 62)cm, ending with WS facing for next row, fasten off.

LEFT FRONT

Ch58 (63: 68: 73: 78).

Row 1 (RS) Dc into second ch from hook, dc into each ch to end, turn.

[57 (62: 67: 72: 77) sts]

Rows 2-15 Repeat Row 2 of Back 14 times.

Row 16 (WS) Ch3, tr into next dc, *ch3, skip 3 dc, tr into each of next 2 dc; rep from * to end, turn. [11 (12: 13: 14: 15)] pattern reps. Work in pattern as given for Back until Left Front measures 54 (56: 58: 60: 62)cm, ending with WS facing for next row, fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT Work as Left Front.

SLEEVES (MAKE 2)

Ch71 (79: 85: 91: 99).

Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook, dc across, turn. [70 (78: 84: 90: 98) sts]

Rows 2-5 Repeat Row 2 of Back.

Row 6 (WS) Ch1, 2dc into first dc, dc into each dc to last st, 2 dc into last dc, turn. [72 (80: 86: 92: 100) sts]

Rows 7-11 Repeat Row 2.

Rows 12-17 Repeat Rows 6-11 once more, fasten off. [74 (82: 88: 94: 102) sts]

TO MAKE UP

Block each piece. Mark point at centre of the last row of the Back – this is centre back neck point. Positionin­g front opening edges so they meet at marked centre back neck point, join both shoulder seams using backstitch.

FRONT BAND

With RS facing, join yarn at base of Right Front opening edge.

Row 1 Ch1, 118 (123: 127: 132: 136) dc evenly up Right Front opening edge to marked centre back neck point, 118 (123: 127: 132: 136) dc evenly down Left Front opening edge to foundation ch edge, turn.

[236 (246: 254: 264: 272) sts]

Rows 2-9 Ch1, dc in each st, turn.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

JOIN SLEEVES

Mark points along the side seam edges on both Front and Back pieces, 18 (19.5: 21: 22.5: 24)cm from shoulder seams – this marks the armhole openings. With WS facing, join the sleeves using your preferred method.
