NOTES

You will make a number of motifs to decorate the Canopy as well as a Banner to attach them to. Make more or fewer motifs if you are using a different-sized Canopy.

LARGE HOLLOW STAR MAKE 9

Using Yarn D, ch70, ss to first ch to join into a ring, being careful not to twist.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as a st throughout), starting in same st at base of beg ch-1, *3dc in next ch, dc in next 5 ch, dec2, dc in next 5 ch; rep from * 4 times more, change to Yarn A and ss to beg ch-1.

Round 2 (Working in bl only) ch1, dc in first st, *2dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, dc3tog, dc in next 5 sts; rep from * 4 times more, omitting last dc, ss to beg ch-1.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

SMALL STAR MAKE 36

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [10 sts]

Round 3 *Dc in next 2 sts, turn, ch1, dc in each of 2 sts just made, turn, ch1, skip first dc, dc in next st, turn, ch1, dc in remaining st, turn, ch1, work 4 ss evenly down left side of star point, ss in same space as 2nd of first 2 dc; rep from * 4 times more.

BANNER

The Banner is worked from the top down. Using Yarn D, ch3.

Round 1 (RS) Make 324fdc, ss to top of first ftr to join, being careful not to twist.

Round 2 Ch2 (does not count as st throughout), starting in same st at base of beg ch-2, tr in each st around, ss to top of first tr.

Round 3 Ch2, tr in bl of each st around, ss to first tr.

Round 4 Ch2, starting in same st at base of beg ch-2, (tr in next 6 sts, ch3, skip 3 sts) around, ss to top of first tr.

[216 tr, 36 ch-3 sps]

Round 5 Ch1 (does not count as a st), starting in same st at base of beg ch-1 *dc in next 6 sts, 6dc in next ch-3 sp (ripple made); rep from * around, ss to first dc. [432 sts]

Join Yarn A.

Round 6 (Working in bl only) ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st around, joining a Large Hollow Star with a ss at the base of every fourth ripple.

Join Yarn A to any spare fl of Round 2.

Round 7 Ch1 (not counted as a st), dc in each st around, ss to first dc.

Fasten off.

Join Yarn D with a ss to any st around the top of the Banner.

Round 8 (Ch20, skip 11 sts. ss to next st) around, working the last ss in the base of the first ch-20. [27 ch loops]

Fasten off and weave in ends.

To secure the Banner around the Canopy, sew the centre of each ch-20 to the seam at the top of the Canopy.

Using a small amount of Yarn E, make a chain measuring the circumference of the Banner; do not fasten off, instead weave this through the ch-3 sps on Round 3 making it longer or shorter as needed. Once in place, ss to the first ch.

Fasten off.

GARLANDS

We have made two Garlands of hollow stars and 4 of the Small Stars but you can mix and match the motifs as you prefer. You will join a motif at all fdc joins (see special abbreviations for instructions). Make 6 tassels from Yarn D to attach to the bottom of each Garland.

HOLLOW STAR GARLAND

Using Yarn A, ch2, 28fdc, (fdc join, 18 fdc) 7 times, ss to tassel. Fasten off.

SHORT STAR GARLAND

Using Yarn A, ch2, 30fdc, (fdc join, 18 fdc) 8 times, ss to tassel. Fasten off.

LONG STAR GARLAND

Using Yarn A, ch2, 30fdc, (fdc join, 18 fdc) 10 times, ss to tassel. Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP

Attach the Garlands to the Banner through the ch-sps of Round 3. We have attached them to the first 3 ch-sps either side of the opening of the Canopy (you can use the image as a guide). Use the ends of the Garlands to secure them in place, then weave in ends.
