CARD SUPPORT

A card insert will support the Hut, making sure the sides are straight and the corners are sharp. Cut three shapes – one for each Gable End, and one to wrap around the Base, Sides and Roof. Use the template on page 93, using your own measurements, as follows.

GABLE ENDS (MAKE 2)

Measure the width of the base and height of the sides of the Hut and draw this out. Measure the distance from Row 24 to the tip of the apex (it should be 1.5 times the height of the side as there are half the number of rows in the apex section as the side section) and draw it, ensuring the tip is centred on the width. Cut out the shape, snipping the tip of the apex so it’s less sharp.

BASE, SIDES AND ROOF

Measure the length of the base of the Hut. This is the width of this card piece. Measure the width of the Gable piece and draw out the rectangle shape of the Hut’s base. Add the height of the side walls above and below the rectangle. Measure the slope of the apex on a Gable End card (this will be the height of one side of the roof); add this top and bottom of the rectangle. Cut out the shape. Make folds along each of the drawn lines.

ASSEMBLE THE CARD SUPPORT

Fold the Base, Sides and Roof card and tape along the roof ridge. Add a Gable end at each end and secure with tape. Wrap tape all around the structure to strengthen it, smoothing all folds and wrinkles in the tape.

TO MAKE UP

Slot the Card Support into the crocheted Base and Sides piece. Place the Roof on top, ensuring there is overhang at the front and side edges. Sew in place using Yarn B.
