TENSION

7 stitch pattern repeats to measure 12cm (4 in) and 10 rows to measure 10cm (4in) over stitch pattern using a 3.75mm hook or size needed to obtain stated tension

The Waistcoat is worked from the bottom up, in separate pieces for the Back and Fronts. Armhole and Front Border edging with button loops are added afterwards.

Foundation row Tr in third ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn.

Row 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), skip next tr, *(tr, ch1, tr) in next st (V-st made), skip next 2 sts; rep from * to last 2 sts, skip next st, tr in top of beg ch-3, turn. [74 (83: 92: 101) sts (OR 24 (27: 30: 33) V-sts])

Row 2 Ch3, 3tr in each ch-1 sp across, tr in top of beg ch-3, turn.

Rows 1 and 2 set pattern. Continue in pattern until work measures 30cm ending with a Row 2, do not fasten off.

BACK NECK SHAPING RIGHT SIDE

Row 1 (RS) Ch3, work in patt completing 5 (6: 7: 7) V-sts, skip next tr, tr in next tr, turn. [17 (20: 23: 23) sts (OR 5 (6: 7: 7) V-sts])

Row 2 Ch3, 2tr in first ch-1 sp, 3-tr in each rem ch-1 sp, tr in top of beg ch-3, turn. [16 (19: 22: 22) sts]

Row 3 Work in patt to last 3 sts, tr in next st, skip next st, tr in top of beg ch-3, turn. [15 (18: 21: 21) sts (OR 4 (5: 6: 6) V-sts])

Row 4 Ch3, skip next tr, 3tr in each ch-1 sp across, tr in top of beg ch-3.

Fasten off.

LEFT SIDE

With RS facing, skip the centre 22 (25: 22: 25) sts and rejoin the yarn in the next st. Row 1 (RS) Ch3, patt to end, turn.

Row 2 Work in patt, working 2 tr in last ch-1 sp instead of 3, turn.

Row 3 Ch3, skip next tr, tr in next tr, work in patt to end, turn.

NECK SHAPING

Work Rows 1-4 of Back Neck Shaping Right Side.

Cont in patt on these 4 (5: 6: 6) V-sts until there are the same number of rows on the Armhole as the Back.

Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT

Work as Left Front to Armholes.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Row 3 Work in patt to last 3 sts, tr in next st, skip next st, tr in top of beg ch-3, turn. [30 (33: 36: 39) sts (OR 9 (10: 11: 12) V-sts])

Row 4 Ch3, skip next tr, 3tr in each ch-1 sp across, tr in top of beg ch-3, turn.

[29 (32: 35: 38) sts] Cont in patt until there are the same number of rows as the Left Front to the Neck Shaping.

NECK SHAPING

Work Rows 1-4 of Back Neck Shaping Left Side.

Cont in patt on these 4 (5: 6: 6) V-sts until there are the same number of rows on the Armhole as the Back.

Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP

Sew shoulder and side seams.

ARMHOLE EDGING

Join yarn at underarm, dc in each underarm st, skip next st, 2dc in each row end around to underarm, skip next st, dc in each underarm st, ss to first dc. Fasten off.

Repeat for other Armhole.

FRONT BORDER

Place 3 markers for button loops starting at neck edge, with 7cm between each loop. Join yarn at bottom corner of Right Front, RS facing.

Next row 2dc in each row end to first marker, ss in next st, ch8, ss in same st (button loop made), cont working 2dc in each row end with a button loop at each marker, skip first and last sts of back neck, working 1dc in each st and continue down left side in the same fashion.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
