MEASUREMEN­TS

Each Flag measures 16.5x15cm (6 x 6in), the Bunting measures 240cm (94in) in length (six flags)

ABBREVIATI­ONS

For a full list, see page 92 The perfect project for a staycation, this super-sweet string of bunting will bring a bright, seaside feel into your summer house or conservato­ry. Make as many flags as you need to bring in the sunshine, no matter what the weather’s doing.

NOTES

Each Flag is crocheted in dc st starting from the point and increasing at the beginning of each row. The turning chains count as a stitch throughout – you may want to use a stitch marker to help you identify them as a stitch in subsequent rows. There are 12 bunting Flags in total.

FLAG MAKE 6

Using Yarn B, ch2.

Row 1 (RS) 3dc in second ch from hook, turn. [3 sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (counts as dc throughout), dc into st at base of ch, dc in next 2 sts, turn. [4 sts]

Row 3 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch and in each st to end, turn. [5 sts]

Rows 4-12 Repeat Row 3. [14 sts]

Rows 13-24 Using Yarn C, repeat Row 3. [26 sts]

Rows 25-36 Using Yarn A, repeat Row 3. [38 sts]

Fasten off and weave in ends.

STRIPED FLAG MAKE 6

Follow the pattern for the Flag, changing colour every 4 rows in the following sequence: Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn A, Yarn D, Yarn E, Yarn D, Yarn A, Yarn C, Yarn B.

ICE CREAM CIRCLES MAKE 9

Make 3 in Yarn D, 3 in Yarn E and 3 in Yarn F. Using yarn specified, ch4, ss to first ch to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 5dc into the ring, ss to first ch to join, turn. [6 sts]

Round 2 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch, 2dc in each st around, ss to first ch, turn. [12 sts]

Round 3 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch, dc in next st, (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 5 times, ss to first ch. [16 sts]

Fasten off leaving a 25cm tail for sewing to Flag.

SUN MAKE 3

Using Yarn D, ch2.

Row 1 (RS) 3dc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. [3 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch, 2dc in each st, turn. [6 sts]

Row 3 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch, dc in next st, (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 2 times, turn. [9 sts]

Row 4 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch, dc in each of next 2 sts, (2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) 2 times, turn. [12 sts]

Row 5 Ch1, dc into st at base of ch, dc in each of next 3 sts, (2dc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts ) 2 times, [15 sts]

Fasten off leaving a 25cm tail for sewing to Flag.

Sew the Ice Creams and Sun onto the Flags using the images as a guide.

SURFACE CROCHET DETAILS

Using the photo as a guide and using simple surface crochet chains, complete the seagulls and waves in Yarn F and the sun rays in Yarn D.

To surface crochet, place the yarn on the WS of the Flag, insert the hook from the RS through the Flag and pull up a loop, *insert the hook along the Flag in the direction you want the surface crochet to go and pull up a loop, slip through loop on the hook; repeat from * across.

TO MAKE UP

Using Yarn E, ch12.

Row 1 With RS of first Flag facing, *dc in each st along top edge of Flag, ch6; repeat from * for each Flag, working a ch12 at the end of the last Flag.

Row 2 Ch1, dc in second ch from hook and in each ch and st to end, turn.

Row 3 Using Yarn D, ss in each st to end.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
