We challenged two designers to come up with a fab design, each using the same yarn… which is your fave?

ICE LOLLIES

Cool off with Susan Yeates’ tasty pair of super-cute ice lollies.

■ ▼endy Supreme Luxury Cotton 4ply (100% cotton, 100g/267m), 1 ball of each: Mirage (1844), Fig (1838), Peach (1830), Chai (1843), Apple Blossom (1825)

■ A 3.25mm (US D/3) hook

■ Toy stuffing, stitch markers

■ 4 black safety eyes, 4mm size

MEASUREMEN­TS

Each Lolly measures 13cm (5in) tall

NOTES

The Lollies are worked from the top down in the amigurumi method, working in a continuous spiral unless otherwise stated. It may help to place a marker in the first st of each round, moving it up as you work.

ICE LOLLY WITH SPRINKLES

BODY

Using a 3.25mm hook and Mirage, ch2.

Round 1 6dc into last ch from hook. [6 sts]

Round 2 2dc into each st around. [12 sts]

Round 3 (Dc, 2dc) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 (Dc in next 5 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [21 sts]

Round 5 (Dc in next 6 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [24 sts] Round 6 (Dc in next 7 sts, 2 dc in next st) 3 times. [27 sts]

Round 7 (Dc next 8 sts, 2 dc in next st) 3 times. [30 sts]

Rounds 8-10 Dc each st around. Change to Fig.

Rounds 11-19 Repeat Round 7. Change to Mirage.

Rounds 20-26 Repeat Round 7.

Turn at the end of Round 26 and work on in rows to create the bottom side of the lolly.

Row 27 Ch1, dc in first 13 sts, turn. [13 sts]

Row 28 Repeat Row 27.

Fasten off.

HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS

Sew simple stitches across the top of the Lolly in Apple Blossom, Peach and Chai.

TO MAKE UP

Place safety eyes between Rounds 12 and 13, 4 sts apart, using the photo as a guide. Stuff the Body of the Lolly, keeping the ‘ice lolly’ shape and the lolly quite flat. Sew up along the bottom to close the Body.

STICK MAKE 2

Using Chai, ch2.

Round 1 6dc into last ch from hook. [6 sts] Rounds 2-8 Dc in each st around, fasten off.

You do not need to stuff the Stick. Sew one Stick in place between Rows 1 and 2 of the base of the Lolly. The second Stick will be used on the next Lolly.

TRIANGLE ICE LOLLY

BODY

Using Peach, ch2.

Round 1 6dc into last ch from hook. [6 sts]

Round 2 Dc each st around.

Round 3 (Dc, 2dc) 3 times. [9 sts]

Round 4 Dc each st around.

Round 5 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [12 sts]

Round 6 Dc each st around.

Round 7 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [15 sts]

Round 8 Dc each st around.

Round 9 (Dc in next 4 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [18 sts]

Round 10 Dc each st around. Change to Fig.

Round 11 (Dc in first 5 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [21 sts]

Rounds 12-13 Dc each st around.

Round 14 (Dc next 6 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [24 sts]

Rounds 15-16 Dc each st around.

Round 17 (Dc next 7 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [27 sts]

Rounds 18-19 Dc each st around. Change to Apple Blossom.

Round 20 (Dc in next 8 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [30 sts]

Rounds 21-26 Dc each st around.

Turn at the end of Round 26 and work on in rows to create the bottom side of the Lolly.

Row 27 Ch1, dc in next 13 sts, turn. [13 sts]

Row 28 Repeat Row 27.

TO MAKE UP

Place safety eyes after Row 11, 4 sts apart, using the photo as a guide.

Stuff with a small amount of stuffing, keeping the shape.

Sew the bottom 2 rows to Round 26 of the Body. Sew up along the bottom of the Lolly to close the Body and sew the Stick in place, as for the first Lolly.

BEACH HUT

■ A piece of card, approximat­ely 50x50cm

■ Masking tape

TENSION

24 sts and 22 rows measures 10x10cm (4x4in) over dc using a 3mm hook

MEASUREMEN­TS

Beach Hut measures 14x10x16.5cm (5 x4x6 in)

NOTES

The Sides section is worked using the amigurumi method, working in continuous spiral unless otherwise stated. Mark the first st of each round with a stitch marker, moving it up as you go.

Change colours on the last yrh of the stitch before the colour change is indicated and carry the colours at the back of your work until they need to be picked up again.

BASE AND SIDES

BASE

With Yarn A, ch15.

Round 1 Dc in third ch from hook (ch-2 sp made), dc in next 11 ch, (ch2, 2dc, ch2) in last ch, turn working other side of chain, dc in next chain, dc next 11 ch, (ch2, 2dc, ch2) in 2-ch sp from beg of round, ss to first st, turn. [28 dc, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 2 Ch1, *dc in each st to next ch-2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ss to beg st, turn. [36 dc, 4 ch-2 sps]

Rounds 3-11 As Round 2. [108 dc, 4ch-2 sps]

Round 12 As Round 2 to ss, ss in bl of beg st, do not turn, do not fasten off.

[116 dc, 4 ch-2 sps]

SIDES

Work in bl only for all rounds, create a stripe by working 2 rounds in Yarn A, 2 rounds in Yarn B repeating up. Round 1 (RS) Continue with Yarn A, ch1, *dc in each dc, skip ch-2 sp; repeat around. [116 sts] Round 2 Dc in each dc round, ss to bl of beg st. Fasten off.

Round 3 Join Yarn B in a corner on the righthand end of a short edge (this short edge will be the back of the Hut), dc each st around. Rounds 4-24 Dc in each st around ending last round with a ss.

Do not fasten off Yarns A or B.

GABLE END APEXES

Work on in rows in bl only, continue in stripe sequence as set.

BACK GABLE

Row 1 (RS) With Yarn A, ch1 (doesn’t count as st here and throughout), dc in 24 sts across, turn. [24 sts]

Rows 2-10 Ch1, dc, dc2tog, dc to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc. [6 sts]

Row 11 Ch1, dc, dc2tog twice, dc. [4 sts]

Row 12 Ch1, dc2tog twice. [2 sts]

Fasten off Yarns A and B and weave in ends. Rejoin Yarn B in the first st of Row 1, dc each row end up the right-hand slope, dc in 2 sts of Row 12, dc in each row end down the left-hand slope, ss in last st of Row 1.

Fasten off. [26 sts]
