MY HOOKY TREASURE

Globe-trotting SF lover Ruth Haydock created the perfect representation of her Earth-citizenship sentiments.

-

My crochet globe is one of the first things I designed and it represents many of my interests, which makes it so special. I love space and science fiction TV, and have lived in different parts of the world. I’ve always felt more of a citizen of Earth than a particular country, so having a crochet globe in my home reminds me where I’m from. It also makes me wonder what else is out there in the cosmos and inspires me to dream.

I was born in the Falkland Islands, which sadly I don’t remember. When I was little I lived in France and then Burkina Faso for a time, before moving to Northern Ireland. In my university years, I lived in Mexico, Scotland and France. Now I live in the south of England.

When I crochet I tend to watch (mainly listen, actually!) to science fiction TV shows and movies, which broaden my mind and inspire me to think differently. I would love to see the Earth from space and, in a way, making a small one of my own is my alternative method of seeing the Earth from above. I made it for myself in the beginning, but I’ve since made some as gifts. I made one for my nephew – he’s still a bit young for me to teach him about continents and countries, but it will get him familiar with the Earth, and the time will come when I can show him on my crochet globe all the places I’ve travelled.

Someone told me they think it’s a great education tool for children and they’ve made one for each of their kids. Someone else bought a few just because they thought they were beautiful and wanted to hang them on a tree as baubles all year round.

The finished design took me a lot of time to create. I wanted it to be as accurate as possible, so I made many, many versions until I got to this design. Now that I’ve perfected it, I can crochet one in less than two hours. I always love making it and seeing the Earth form in my hands.
