Stand out from the traffic with a colourful motif backpack to pack with books, hooks and more. By Matt Spiers.
■ DMC Natura Medium (100% cotton, 50g/75m), 8 balls of Vanilla (03),
4 balls of Aluminium (120),
1 ball of each: Emerald (138), Amethyst (06), Super Red (55), Buttercup (99), Orange Tree (109)
■ A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook
■ A 30cm (12in) white zip
■ A 51cm (20in) white zip
Each Motif measures 5x5cm (2x2in)
The Backpack measures 35x25cm (13 x10in)
Ss zipper join Place 2 Motifs next to each other, ss in corner ch of both squares by placing the hook going from front to back through the back loop of the left Motif, going from front to back through back loop of right Motif, with the yarn at the back of work, yrh and pull through all 3 loops, ss in each st across working through loops of both Motifs, ss in next ch-2 sp
Dc join Attach yarn to your hook, insert hook into st specified, yrh, pull up loop, yrh, draw through all loops on hook
FPdc Insert hook from front to back around post of stitch in previous row, yrh and complete as for dc stitch
The first 2 rounds of the Circle Square Motif are made up of the following colours: 21 in Emerald, 21 in Super Red, 17 in Amethyst, 18 in Buttercup and 18 in Orange Tree.
The Motifs will be joined into 11 panels which will make up the bag. Please refer to the Chart on page 94 when constructing your Backpack.
CIRCLE SQUARE MOTIF MAKE 95 Using colours specified in the notes, ch4 and join with ss to form a loop.
Round 1 Ch3 (counts as tr), 11tr into loop, ss to first st to join. [12 tr]
Round 2 (RS) Dc join Vanilla around the post of any st, FPdc around each st, ss to first st to join. [12 FPdc]
Round 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), *dc in next 2 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in next st; rep from * 3 more times, join with ss to first st. [16 dc, 4 ch-2 sps]
Round 4 Ch1, dc in next 3 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, *dc in next 4 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * 2 more times, dc in last st, ss to first st to join. [24 dc, 4 ch-2 sps] Fasten off and weave in ends.
PLAIN SQUARE MOTIF (MAKE 63) Using Aluminium throughout, repeat Rounds 1-4 of the Circle Square Motif; you do not need to change colours after Round 1.
CIRCLE CORNER MOTIF (MAKE 2)
Using Amethyst, ch3.
Row 1 (RS) 5tr in third ch from hook, skipped ch-2 counts as tr, turn. [6 tr]
Row 2 (WS) Dc join Vanilla around the post of last tr made, FPdc around each st across, FPdc around post of beg ch-2 from Round 1, turn. [6 FPdc]
Row 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), 2dc in first st, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, turn. [10 dc, 1 ch-2 sp]
Row 4 Ch1, 2dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in last st.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Repeat Rows 1-4 using Buttercup for Round 1.
PLAIN CORNER MOTIF (MAKE 4)
Make 2 using Vanilla only and 2 using Aluminium only.
Repeat Rows 1-4 of the Circle Corner Motif.
EXTENDED CIRCLE SQUARE MOTIF (MAKE 4)
Take a Circle Square Motif with a Super Red centre.
Row 1 (WS) Dc join Vanilla into the first ch of any ch-2 sp, dc in next 6 sts, dc in next ch-sp, turn. [8 dc]
Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st across. [8 dc]
Rows 3-4 Join Vanilla on the opposite side of the Motif. Repeat Rows 1-2.
Make 3 more Motifs, one with a Super Red centre and two with a Buttercup centre.
You will need to make 11 Panels as shown on the Chart on page 94. All joins are made with the ss zipper method as detailed in the Abbreviations section, using either Vanilla or Aluminium to match the last round of the Motif.
Round 1 (RS) Taking Strap A, join Vanilla with a dc in the corner ch-2 sp of the Amethyst Circle Square Motif, dc evenly across. [80 dc]
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Repeat on the opposite side, starting in side of the plain corner Motif. [88 dc]
Repeat both sides for Strap B and weave in ends.
Taking Top Strip A with RS facing, dc join into the corner sp of the end Emerald Circle Square Motif.
Row 1 Dc evenly across the long side of the strip, turn. [80 dc]
Rows 2-3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st across, turn.
Repeat Rows 1-3 on Top Strip B, working on the opposite side of the Strip and starting with the Orange Tree Circle Square Motif.
TO MAKE UP JOIN SIDES
When joining refer to the Chart on page 94, the blue arrows show where the joins are made.
The Two Top Strips A and B will run along the side of the zip for the main bag opening. Join the ends of Top Strips A and B to the top edge of Side A, leaving a gap of 2ss in the centre where the zip will be. Repeat for the other ends of the Top Strips, joining to the top of Side B and working your join in the opposite direction so that you start with Top Strip B first.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Working on the WS, pin the large zip in place on each side of the Top Strips. When you’re happy with the placement, sew the zip in place.
Using Vanilla, work border around Pocket Front:
Round 1 (WS) Dc join with WS facing in top corner ch of Amethyst Motif as marked by the starting point on the Chart for Pocket Front, dc in bl of each st and ch-sp around Pocket Front, ss to first dc to join. [128 dc]
Round 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st around, join to first dc with ss.
Round 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in next 72 sts around, ending in line with the top of the Buttercup Motif on the opposite side. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
With RS facing, repeat Rounds 1-3 in Vanilla on the Pocket Back, working Round 1 in the fl only.
Pin the small zip in place in the remaining unworked stitches from Round 3 on the Pocket Front and Pocket Back sections and sew into place.
Turn the Pocket inside out, using the tail left on the Pocket Back, whipstitch together the Pocket Front with the Pocket Back over the 72 sts of Round 3, weave in ends.
Join the bottom edge of Front Main to the unworked bl along Top Edge of the Pocket Back.
Join the sides of the Pocket Back with the Side Panels, joining up along the Front Main Panel and the Top Strip (the Circle Corner Motifs on the Front Main should join up with the Extended Circle Square Motifs in Strip A).
Join the 5-square edge of the Base Panel with the bottom edge of the Pocket Back. Join both 3-square edges of base panel with bottom edge of Side Panel A and B. Join 5-square edge of base panel with bottom edge of Main Back.
Join Main Back to Side A, Top Strip B and Side B.
Sew the top of each Strap to the Back Main, and sew the diagonal edge of the Plain Corner Motif at bottom of straps to the bottom sides of the Back Main.
