Stand out from the traf­fic with a colour­ful mo­tif back­pack to pack with books, hooks and more. By Matt Spiers.

■ DMC Natura Medium (100% cot­ton, 50g/75m), 8 balls of Vanilla (03),

4 balls of Alu­minium (120),

1 ball of each: Emer­ald (138), Amethyst (06), Su­per Red (55), But­ter­cup (99), Or­ange Tree (109)

■ A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook

■ A 30cm (12in) white zip

■ A 51cm (20in) white zip


Each Mo­tif mea­sures 5x5cm (2x2in)


The Back­pack mea­sures 35x25cm (13 x10in)


Ss zip­per join Place 2 Mo­tifs next to each other, ss in cor­ner ch of both squares by plac­ing the hook go­ing from front to back through the back loop of the left Mo­tif, go­ing from front to back through back loop of right Mo­tif, with the yarn at the back of work, yrh and pull through all 3 loops, ss in each st across work­ing through loops of both Mo­tifs, ss in next ch-2 sp

Dc join At­tach yarn to your hook, insert hook into st spec­i­fied, yrh, pull up loop, yrh, draw through all loops on hook

FPdc Insert hook from front to back around post of stitch in pre­vi­ous row, yrh and com­plete as for dc stitch


The first 2 rounds of the Cir­cle Square Mo­tif are made up of the fol­low­ing colours: 21 in Emer­ald, 21 in Su­per Red, 17 in Amethyst, 18 in But­ter­cup and 18 in Or­ange Tree.

The Mo­tifs will be joined into 11 pan­els which will make up the bag. Please re­fer to the Chart on page 94 when con­struct­ing your Back­pack.

CIR­CLE SQUARE MO­TIF MAKE 95 Us­ing colours spec­i­fied in the notes, ch4 and join with ss to form a loop.

Round 1 Ch3 (counts as tr), 11tr into loop, ss to first st to join. [12 tr]

Fas­ten off.

Round 2 (RS) Dc join Vanilla around the post of any st, FPdc around each st, ss to first st to join. [12 FPdc]

Round 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), *dc in next 2 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in next st; rep from * 3 more times, join with ss to first st. [16 dc, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 4 Ch1, dc in next 3 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, *dc in next 4 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * 2 more times, dc in last st, ss to first st to join. [24 dc, 4 ch-2 sps] Fas­ten off and weave in ends.

PLAIN SQUARE MO­TIF (MAKE 63) Us­ing Alu­minium through­out, re­peat Rounds 1-4 of the Cir­cle Square Mo­tif; you do not need to change colours after Round 1.


Us­ing Amethyst, ch3.

Row 1 (RS) 5tr in third ch from hook, skipped ch-2 counts as tr, turn. [6 tr]

Fas­ten off.

Row 2 (WS) Dc join Vanilla around the post of last tr made, FPdc around each st across, FPdc around post of beg ch-2 from Round 1, turn. [6 FPdc]

Row 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), 2dc in first st, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, turn. [10 dc, 1 ch-2 sp]

Row 4 Ch1, 2dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in last st.

Fas­ten off and weave in ends. Re­peat Rows 1-4 us­ing But­ter­cup for Round 1.


Make 2 us­ing Vanilla only and 2 us­ing Alu­minium only.

Re­peat Rows 1-4 of the Cir­cle Cor­ner Mo­tif.


Take a Cir­cle Square Mo­tif with a Su­per Red cen­tre.

Row 1 (WS) Dc join Vanilla into the first ch of any ch-2 sp, dc in next 6 sts, dc in next ch-sp, turn. [8 dc]

Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st across. [8 dc]

Fas­ten off.

Rows 3-4 Join Vanilla on the op­po­site side of the Mo­tif. Re­peat Rows 1-2.

Make 3 more Mo­tifs, one with a Su­per Red cen­tre and two with a But­ter­cup cen­tre.


You will need to make 11 Pan­els as shown on the Chart on page 94. All joins are made with the ss zip­per method as de­tailed in the Ab­bre­vi­a­tions sec­tion, us­ing ei­ther Vanilla or Alu­minium to match the last round of the Mo­tif.


Round 1 (RS) Taking Strap A, join Vanilla with a dc in the cor­ner ch-2 sp of the Amethyst Cir­cle Square Mo­tif, dc evenly across. [80 dc]

Fas­ten off leav­ing a long tail. Re­peat on the op­po­site side, start­ing in side of the plain cor­ner Mo­tif. [88 dc]

Fas­ten off.

Re­peat both sides for Strap B and weave in ends.


Taking Top Strip A with RS fac­ing, dc join into the cor­ner sp of the end Emer­ald Cir­cle Square Mo­tif.

Row 1 Dc evenly across the long side of the strip, turn. [80 dc]

Rows 2-3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st across, turn.

Fas­ten off.

Re­peat Rows 1-3 on Top Strip B, work­ing on the op­po­site side of the Strip and start­ing with the Or­ange Tree Cir­cle Square Mo­tif.


When join­ing re­fer to the Chart on page 94, the blue ar­rows show where the joins are made.

The Two Top Strips A and B will run along the side of the zip for the main bag open­ing. Join the ends of Top Strips A and B to the top edge of Side A, leav­ing a gap of 2ss in the cen­tre where the zip will be. Re­peat for the other ends of the Top Strips, join­ing to the top of Side B and work­ing your join in the op­po­site di­rec­tion so that you start with Top Strip B first.

Fas­ten off and weave in ends. Work­ing on the WS, pin the large zip in place on each side of the Top Strips. When you’re happy with the place­ment, sew the zip in place.


Us­ing Vanilla, work bor­der around Pocket Front:

Round 1 (WS) Dc join with WS fac­ing in top cor­ner ch of Amethyst Mo­tif as marked by the start­ing point on the Chart for Pocket Front, dc in bl of each st and ch-sp around Pocket Front, ss to first dc to join. [128 dc]

Round 2 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st around, join to first dc with ss.

Round 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in next 72 sts around, end­ing in line with the top of the But­ter­cup Mo­tif on the op­po­site side. Fas­ten off, leav­ing a long tail.

With RS fac­ing, re­peat Rounds 1-3 in Vanilla on the Pocket Back, work­ing Round 1 in the fl only.

Pin the small zip in place in the re­main­ing un­worked stitches from Round 3 on the Pocket Front and Pocket Back sec­tions and sew into place.

Turn the Pocket in­side out, us­ing the tail left on the Pocket Back, whip­stitch to­gether the Pocket Front with the Pocket Back over the 72 sts of Round 3, weave in ends.


Join the bot­tom edge of Front Main to the un­worked bl along Top Edge of the Pocket Back.

Join the sides of the Pocket Back with the Side Pan­els, join­ing up along the Front Main Panel and the Top Strip (the Cir­cle Cor­ner Mo­tifs on the Front Main should join up with the Ex­tended Cir­cle Square Mo­tifs in Strip A).

Join the 5-square edge of the Base Panel with the bot­tom edge of the Pocket Back. Join both 3-square edges of base panel with bot­tom edge of Side Panel A and B. Join 5-square edge of base panel with bot­tom edge of Main Back.

Join Main Back to Side A, Top Strip B and Side B.

Sew the top of each Strap to the Back Main, and sew the di­ag­o­nal edge of the Plain Cor­ner Mo­tif at bot­tom of straps to the bot­tom sides of the Back Main.
