SQUARES SCARF

Stitch up some simple squares to make this funky scarf. By Sara Huntington.

■ DMC Natura Medium (100% cotton, 50g/75m), 5 balls of Vanilla (03), 1 ball of each: Emerald (138), Amethyst (06), Super Red (55), Buttercup (99), Orange Tree (109)

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

TENSION

Each square measures 6x6cm (2 x2 in)

MEASUREMENTS

The Scarf measures 200x20cm (78 x8in) not including the bobble trim

ABBREVIATIONS

MB (Make bobble) (Yrh, insert hook into ch-sp, yrh, pull up the loop, yrh, pull through two loops on the hook) 4 times, yrh, pull through all loops on the hook, ch3, (yrh, insert hook into last st made, yrh, pull up the loop, yrh, pull through two loops on the hook) 3 times, yrh, pull through all the loops on the hook, fold the top st over the bottom st and ss into the ch-sp

All squares are made in two rounds with the coloured squares changing colours mid round as indicated.

PLAIN SQUARE MAKE 30

With Vanilla, ch4 and ss into first ch to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), 2tr into ring, ch2, (3tr into ring, ch2) 3 times, ss in beg ch-3 to join. [12 tr, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 2 Ss in next 2 sts, ss in the first ch-2 sp, ch3, (2tr, ch2, 3tr) in same ch-sp, *ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-sp; repeat from * two times more, ch1, ss into beg ch-3 to join, ss into next 2 sts, ss into ch-sp.

[24 tr, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps]

Fasten off and weave in ends.

COLOUR SQUARE MAKE 60

Each Square is made up of Vanilla and one other colour; in the pattern you will be directed to change colour.

Make 12 Squares in each of the 5 colours. With Vanilla yarn, ch4 and ss into first ch to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3, 2tr into ring, ch2, 3tr into ring, ch2, change colour, (3tr into ring, ch2) 2 times, change to Vanilla, ss in beg ch-3 to join. [12 tr, 4 ch-2 sps]

Round 2 Ss in next 2 sts, ss into ch-2 sp, ch3, (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same sp, ch1, (3tr, ch2) into next ch-sp, change colour, 3tr into same ch-sp, ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1) in next ch-sp, (3tr, ch2) in next ch-sp, change to Vanilla, 3tr in same ch-sp, ch1, ss to beg ch3 to join, ss in next 2 sts and into next ch-sp.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

JOIN THE SQUARES

Whipstitch the Squares together, following the Chart on page 93. The Chart needs to be repeated 3 times so the Scarf is 30 Squares long.

EDGING

Join Vanilla into any corner of the Scarf. Round 1 (RS) Ch1, *3dc into corner, dc in each st and ch-sp to next corner; repeat from * 3 more times, ss to first dc to join. Fasten off.

Round 2 Join Orange Tree into any st, ss into each dc around.

Fasten off.

BOBBLE TRIM

Join Orange Tree into the right-hand corner of one of the short edges.

Row 1 (RS) *Ch4, MB in fourth ch from hook, ch3, skip 3 sts, ss in next st; repeat from * 6 times more, ch3, ss in last st.

Fasten off.

Repeat Row 1 on the opposite end of the Scarf.
