MY HOOKY TREASURE

Italian crochet designer Samanta Fornino was up all night making a rug for her daughter – and it’s still special now

There is no doubt, one of my all-time favourite pieces of crocheted work is this bear rug that lives on my daughter’s bedroom floor. Every time I see it, sweet memories flood back into my mind. It was springtime a couple of years ago when my pregnancy was blooming and I discovered that my third child was going to be a baby girl, after two lovely boys.

That night I couldn’t sleep. Lying on the sofa wondering about the new baby, I felt the need to do something special, something just for her, made by my own hands and filled with love. Simply, as with many other times, my crochet hook was right there to offer a solution. The night flew by, and the stitches became this bear rug – a big bear face, a few soft colours, a girly look and a round shape. It was, and is, the perfect fit for Maria Vittoria’s room.

The finished bear rug is wonderfully comfortable thanks to the thick yarn (Big Ribbon by Katia Yarn) and the simple stitches. It’s a great rug for a child’s room. Ever since her baby years, she has sat, rolled and slept on it. Even now, almost two years later, I like to see her playing on the rug. It’s not just part of the furniture, but her childhood memories, too.

All of my friends and followers loved it, mainly because of the simple, child-friendly design and easy pattern. If you have a long night to spend awake, dreaming of little ones (just like it was for me!) you could even finish it before breakfast. Alternatively, find a few peaceful hours during a busy week to make it up.

After making the rug, I started crocheting more and more with wonderful, big, thick yarn like this – soft to the touch and easy to use. The pattern for this rug (and a cute matching cushion) are available on the Katia Yarn blog. Happy crocheting!
