shoulder season

Go for an on-trend, o -the-shoulder look with this stylish sweater by Katie Moore, The Queen Stitch

-

This chic off-the-shoulder jumper gives an elegant feel to the colder months. The overlapping cable yoke and the mini-cabled cuffs make for a stunning finish. It’s perfect for the party season.

NOTES

Front and Back are worked separately in rows from the bottom up and seamed. The Cuff is worked as a separate narrow strip in rows and then Sleeves are worked in rows onto the Cuff row-ends. The Sleeves are seamed so that they can be joined in with the Front and Back to work the Yoke in the round as one piece. The Yoke decreases towards the neckline and there is an eyelet round towards the end of the Yoke so that you can weave a tie through to adjust the shoulder width. The Collar is worked separately as a narrow strip in rows and sewn on afterwards. The garment is designed as a close fit, so the Actual Bust measurement is only slightly larger than the To Fit Bust measurement. Bust width a: 42 (44.5: 47: 49.5: 52: 55)cm, 16 (17 : 18 : 19 : 20 : 21 )in

MAIN SLEEVE

Rotate the Cuff 90 degrees to work in the row ends, with WS facing.

Row 1 (RS) Ch3 (include this in your stitch count), and evenly work 5 (6: 5: 5: 6: tr for every 4 rows of the Cuff, plus an extra 2 (0: 1: 3: 0: sts, turn. [22 (24: 26: 28: 30: sts] Row 2 (Increase row) Ch3, tr in same st, tr in each st to end, turn. [23 (25: 27: 29: 31: sts] The increase pattern is set as follows. For all sizes alternate the position of the increase st in the Increase row between the beg and the end of the row (by working Ch3, tr in same st on one Increase row and 2tr in last st on next Increase row):

SIZE 8 ONLY (Plain row of tr, Increase row) 13 times to give a total of 28 rows and 36 sts. SIZES 10 AND 12 ONLY (Plain row of tr, Increase row) 2 times, then an extra plain row. [27 (29) sts]

*(Plain row of tr, Increase row) 3 times, then an extra plain row; rep from * twice more. [36 (38) sts; a total of 28 rows] SIZES 14 AND 16 ONLY Work a plain row of tr.

(2 plain rows of tr, Increase row) 9 times to give a total of 38 (40) sts and 30 rows. SIZE 18 ONLY Work 2 plain rows of tr.

(3 plain rows of tr, Increase row) 7 times to give a total of 40 sts and 32 rows. ALL SIZES Fasten off.

Fold the Sleeve RS together and work a dc seam evenly to join, starting at the widest point of the Sleeve and ending at the Cuff. When you reach the Cuff, do not fasten off but turn Sleeve RS out to work around the edge of the Cuff with RS facing. Repeat the st spacing of Row 1 of the Sleeve with htr sts evenly around the cuff edge, ss to first st. Fasten off.

Join Sleeves to Body by aligning top of Sleeve with top of Body, RS together, with seams matching. Working from the WS, dc through both Sleeve and Body for 7 (7: 7: 7: 8: 8) sts on each side of the seam to join.

[14 (14: 14: 14: 16: 16) sts for underarm gusset] Repeat for other Sleeve.

YOKE

You have lost 14 (14: 14: 14: 16: 16) sts on both Sleeves and both sides of the Body for the underarms, leaving a total of 34 (37: 40: 43: 44: 47) working sts on each of the Front and Back, and 22 (22: 24: 24: 24: 24) sts on each Sleeve. Place a marker between the stitches at each join of the Sleeve and Body and move them up each round as you continue with the decreases.

[112 (118: 128: 134: 136: 142) sts and 4 markers] YOKE SHAPING PATTERN The Yoke Shaping pattern is made up of decrease rounds and plain rounds. The instructions for each size are given after the description of the decrease rounds below. Most of the decrease rounds decrease by 8 sts per round (Dec8Round), and the instructions for this round are as follows:

Dec8Round (RS) Ch3, tr in each st to last st before the marked join with the left Sleeve, *skip last st, and next st after marker. Tr in each st across the Sleeve until last st before the marked join with the Front, skip last st and next st after marker, tr in each st across Front to last st before marked join with right Sleeve; rep from * for left Sleeve and join with Back, then work across the Back to the beginning of the round, ss to top of beg ch-3. Move the markers up between the sts of each Front and Sleeve/Back and Sleeve as you work.

For sizes 10, 12 and 18, a decrease round that decreases by 4 sts (Dec4round) is also required:

Dec4Round Work as for the Dec8Round, but replace the set of 2 skipped sts at each marker with a tr2tog. You can remove the markers on this round as it is the last decrease round to be worked in each case. Towards the end of the Yoke, there is also an Eyelet round, which is used for weaving a tie later:

Eyelet Round Ch4 (counts as tr, ch1), skip next st, tr in next st, ch1, skip next st; rep from * around, ss to to third ch of beg ch-4. Move the markers up in this round as before. Some sizes have plain rounds worked as follows:

Plain Round Ch3, tr in each st around, moving markers up.

The shaping pattern for each size is as follows: SIZES 8, 10 AND 12 ONLY Dec8Round 4(5: 6) times, Eyelet Round, Dec8Round 1(0: 0) times, Dec4Round 0 (1: 1) times.

[Total of 6 (7: 8) rounds, 72 (74: 76) sts]

Fasten off. SIZES 14 AND 16 ONLY 0 (1) Plain Rounds, (2 Dec8Rounds, Plain Round) twice, 2 Dec8Rounds, Eyelet Round, Dec8Round.

[Total of 10 (11) rounds, 78 (80) sts]

Fasten off. SIZE 18 ONLY (2 Dec8Rounds, Plain Round) twice, 3 Dec8Rounds, Eyelet Round, Dec4Round. [Total of 11 rounds, 82 sts]

Fasten off. ALL SIZES: COLLAR This section is worked with the same stitch counts for sizes 8, 10, 12 and for 14, 16, 18 so sizes will be presented 8/10/12 (14/16/18). Ch17 (21).

Row 1 (RS) Htr in second ch from hook (skipped ch does not count as st), htr in next 2 (4) sts, 10tr, 3 (5) htr, turn. [16 (20) sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 3(5) htr, 10BPtr, 3 (5) htr, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, 3 (5) htr, skip next 5 sts, FPttr around each of next 5 sts, FPttr around each skipped st, 3 (5) htr, turn.

Row 4 Repeat Row 2.

Row 5 Ch1, 3 (5) htr, 10FPtr, 3 (5) htr, turn.

Row 6 Repeat Row 2.

Repeat Rows 1-6, 13 (13: 13: 14: 14: 14) times replacing the 10 tr in Row 1 with 10 FPtr, do not fasten off. [84 (84: 84: 90: 90: 90) rows] Rotate the cable to work into the row ends with RS facing, alternating (htr in next row end, 2htr in next row end) across.

[126 (126: 126:, 135: 135: 135] sts.

Fasten off.

This edge will form the outside edge of the Collar. Weave in all ends.

TO MAKE UP

With WS facing, work a dc seam across the two short ends of the Collar to join into a loop. Pin the Collar evenly around the neckline with the RS of the Collar to the WS of the neckline so that the RS of the collar is facing when you turn it over. Dc seam or sew into position.

If you need to pull the jumper in around the shoulders, make a tie using foundation dc so that it fits around the shoulders with an additional 20cm for tying. Weave the tie through the eyelet round and hide the bow underneath the Collar.
