How do I work colour cables?

Get ready to cross your post stitches

-

Moving cables around the fabric is surprisingly easy to do by skipping stitches and returning to them, which alters their order. Moved background sts are worked as post sts to avoid holes or puckers and are hidden on the WS.

Step 1 Let’s move the cable strands closer together on Row 4 (WS). Turn, using A, ch2, htr in next A st, skip 2 B sts, FPdtr around next A st, change to B. You’ve moved an A st from between the cable strands to the outside and hidden the move on the WS.

Step 2 Using B, BPdtr around the first skipped B st, then the second skipped B st, change to A. Using A, htr in the next unworked A st (we’ve marked it) – don’t work into the A st that already has the FPdtr around it. Use stitch markers to help you keep track of stitches.

Step 3 Htr in the next A st, change to B. Skip the next A st.

Step 4 Using B, BPdtr around the next 2 B sts, change to A. Using A, FPdtr around the skipped A st (marked). You’ve now moved 2 A sts from the centre to the outside, reducing the sts between the cable strands from 4 to 2.

Step 5 To finish, htr in the last 2 sts. Turn and your cable strands will be closer together.

Step 6 Continue to bring the cable strands together with Row 5 (RS): Using A, ch2, htr in 2 A sts, skip 2 B sts, BPdtr around next A st, change to B, FPdtr around next 2 B sts, skip unworked A st, FPdtr around next 2 B sts, change to A, BPdtr around skipped A st, htr in last 3 A sts. Now your cable strands are together.
