ABBREVIATIONS For a full list, see page 92 Designer Becky Skuse says: “Embrace the joy of crocheted colour with this leaping dolphins notebook cover. It’s the perfect project for flexing your colourwork muscles, with plenty of features to keep you interested but without being too tricky. On each row, there are no more than two colours to keep track of, and each colourful area is ideal for practising one of the three main colourwork techniques: a tapestry crochet sea, intarsia dolphins and Fair Isle sunshine. The cover sits on the outside of the notebook, secured with lining fabric on the inside to reduce bulk and create a better fit. The lining fabric also creates handy pockets at the front and back of the notebook.”

NOTES

The Notebook Cover should be made using the Chart on page 94. On the Chart, each square represents one dc stitch. Work RS rows from right to the left, and WS rows from left to right. To help you, the first two rows are written out in full below.

Change colours on the last yrh on the st before the colour change is indicated.

COLOURWORK NOTES

The Notebook Cover is divided into three sections, each using a different colourwork technique.

Work the wavy sea at the bottom with tapestry crochet, or Fair Isle if you prefer, using Moss and Cobalt.

Work the dolphin motifs with the intarsia technique using Slate Grey and Pale Sky for the background. You’ll need to wind four small balls of Slate Grey and five small balls of Pale Sky. To reduce the number of balls you need to use, you can work some of the stitches in this section using Fair Isle.

Work the sunshine section with Fair Isle, or Tapestry crochet if you prefer, using Pale Honey and Pale Sky. NOTEBOOK COVER

TO MAKE UP

Weave in all ends.

Block the Notebook Cover to measurements given. Once dry, wrap around the closed notebook and clip in place. Using a sewing needle and thread, make approx 10 long stitches from the top of the crochet Cover, over the first page of the A5 notebook, to the bottom of the crochet Cover. Repeat with the last page of the A5 notebook. These stitches will hold the Cover in place while you add the lining fabric.

LINING

Take one piece of lining fabric and press approx 1.5cm to the WS around all four edges. Place on top of the long stitches over the first page of the A5 notebook and adjust the folds in the fabric as necessary to achieve a nice fit (our piece measured 15x22cm). Use sewing clips to hold the fabric in place. Sew the fabric to the WS of the crochet Cover, across the top, down the outside and across the bottom (the open inner edge will form a handy pocket). Make sure your stitches aren’t visible from the front. Repeat this with the other piece of lining fabric on the back page.
