How to work colourwork crochet

Refresh your colour-changing skills

-

The process for changing colour between stitches is the same for tapestry crochet, Fair Isle and intarsia. To practise this process, you just need two colours of DK yarn (we used cream and pink) and a 4mm hook. Using colour 1 (cream), work 2 rows of 10 dc (ch11, dc in 2nd ch and each ch to end, turn, ch1, dc in each dc across, turn).

Step 1 Start Row 3 (a RS row) with ch1 and then work the first 2 dc in cream – stop before the final yrh of the 2nd dc.

Step 2 Twist together the cream yarn with colour 2 (pink) to make sure there are no holes in the fabric. You can make it loosely and then tighten it up.

Step 3 Work the final yrh using pink. You’ll have a loop of the new colour (pink) on the hook, ready to work the next stitch in pink. You’ll see that when changing colour between stitches, you need to pay attention to which colour is used for the next stitch as you go – then you need to change colour on the last yrh of the last stitch of the old colour, and you’ll be ready to work the next stitch in the new colour.

Step 4 Next, we’re going to use the above process of changing colour between stitches, along with one of the three colourwork techniques to hook this chart. So keep hold of this practice piece.
