BOBBLE HAT

A fun weekend make, by Marianne Rawlins

■ Novita 7 Veljestä (75% wool, 25% polyamide, 100g/200m), 1 ball of each: Stone (043), Off White (010)

■ Novita 7 Veljestä Pohjola (75% wool, 25% polyamide, 100g/200m), 1 ball of each: Sisu (055), Inspiration (050), Serene (017)

■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

■ Extra-large pompom maker

TENSION

20sts and 20 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over double crochet in the round, using a 4mm hook or size needed to obtain correct tension

MEASUREMENTS

Hat measures approx 57cm (22 in) in diameter

NOTES

Hat is worked top down in rounds with RS facing throughout.

Change colour on the final yrh of previous stitch and carry unused yarn across the WS. Be careful not to pull the carried yarn too tightly as this may affect the overall circumference of the Hat.

There is a Chart on page 95, which you will need to refer to for the colourwork section. Each small square represents 1 dc st. Read all rows from right to left and repeat the Chart a total of 10 times on each round.

HAT CROWN

Using Inspiration, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (counts as a dc throughout), 9dc into loop, ss to top of beg ch-1 to join. [10 sts]

Round 2 Ch1, dc in st at base of ch-1, 2dc in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-1. [20 sts]

Round 3 Ch1, 2dc in next st (dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 9 times, ss to top of beg ch-1, change to Stone. [30 sts]

Round 4 Ch1, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, (2dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1. [40 sts]

Round 5 Ch1, 2dc, 2dc in next st (3dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1. [50 sts]

Round 6 Ch1, 3dc, 2dc in next st, (4dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1, change to Inspiration. [60 sts]

Round 7 Ch1, 4dc, 2dc in next st, (5dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1. [70 sts]

Round 8 Ch1, 5dc, 2dc in next st, (6dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1. [80 sts]

Round 9 Ch1, 6dc, 2dc in next st, (7dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1, change to Stone. [90 sts]

Round 10 Ch1, 7dc, 2dc in next st, (8dc, 2dc in next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-1. [100 sts]

Round 11 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-1, change to Off White.

Rounds 12-13 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-1.

COLOURWORK

Rounds 14-34 As Round 12, using the Chart on page 95 for all colour changes.

Repeat the 10 sts of the Chart 10 times on each round.

Fasten off.

BRIM

Join Stone in any st from Round 34.

Round 1 Ch3 (counts as tr), tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [100 sts]

Round 2 Ch3 (counts as BPtr), (FPtr around next st, BPtr around next st) around, ss to top of beg ch-3.

Rounds 3-4 As Round 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

POMPOM

Make a large pompom using an equal mix of all colours and attach to top of the Hat. Weave in any remaining ends.
