This triangular wrap is simpler than it seems!

YOU WILL NEED

■ Cygnet Cottony DK (46% cotton, 46% acrylic, 8% viscose, 50g/111m) 2 balls of Yarn A Oatmeal (544) 3 balls of each:

Yarn B Vanilla (848)*

Yarn C Poppy (200)*

■ An 8mm (US L/11) Tunisian cabled

You’ll be well prepared for the blustery winds with this triangular scarf, which tucks neatly in to a coat front. While the shape might seem intimidati­ng, Tunisian’s ‘no turn’ decrease method actually works perfectly for a neat, natural diagonal reduction.

NOTES

Shawl is worked using Tunisian simple stitch, decreasing one stitch each row. Vertical stripes are worked at the end using the surface crochet technique. A border is worked around the Shawl using standard crochet stitches. Change colour on the final yrh of RetP to begin next row in new colour.

*Two of the shades used to make this Shawl have been discontinu­ed and we have listed the closest colours available. The original colours used were Pistachio (266) and Coral (549).

PLAID SHAWL

Using an 8mm hook and Yarn B, ch120.

Row 1 (RS) *Insert hook into bl of next ch across, yrh and pull up a loop; rep from * across (120 loops on hook), RetP across. [120 sts]

Row 2 Tss2tog, Tss in each vertical bar across (119 loops on hook), RetP across. [119 sts]

Rows 3-5 As Row 2, changing to Yarn A on the final yrh of RetP of Row 5. [116 sts]

Rows 6-7 As Row 2, changing to Yarn B on the final yrh of RetP of Row 7. [114 sts] Continue repeating Row 2 using the following colour sequence:

Rows 8-12 Yarn B.

Row 13 Yarn C.

Row 14 Yarn A.

Row 15 Yarn C.

Rows 16-20 Yarn B.

Rows 21-22 Yarn A.

Rows 23-27 Yarn B.

Rows 28-32 Yarn C.

Rows 33-34 Yarn A.

Rows 35-39 Yarn C.

Row 40 Yarn B.

Row 41 Yarn A.

Row 42 Yarn B.

Rows 43-47 Yarn C.

Rows 48-49 Yarn A.

Rows 50-54 Yarn C.

Rows 55-59 Yarn B.

Rows 60-61 Yarn A.

You should have 60 sts at the end of Row 61. Continue in patt, repeating colour sequence from Row 8 until you work a final row with 2 sts (first loop on hook and 1 Tss2tog), RetP across. Do not fasten off.

BORDER

Continuing with an 8mm hook and Yarn A.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, (dc in each st or row end to corner, 3dc in corner) around, ss to beg dc to join, turn.

Change to Yarn C.

Round 2 (WS) Ch1, reverse dc in each st around, ss to beg dc.

Fasten off.

SURFACE CROCHET STRIPES

PM in each 10th st across Row 1.

Using a 6mm hook and Yarn A, surface ss vertically from marked st up to slanted edge.

Fasten off.

Repeat for all marked sts across, leaving stitch markers in place.

Using Yarn C, surface crochet in sts to the RH side of each marker so surface crochet runs parallel to previous stripes worked. Using Yarn B, surface crochet in the sts to the RH side of every second Yarn C stripe.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
