Throw some shapes with the help of Cassie Ward’s hexagon and triangle design.

■ Scheepjes Whirlette (60% cotton 40% acrylic 100g/455m) in Bubble (866), Ice (860), Rose (859), Banana (858), Citrus (864)

■ A 2.5mm (US B/1 or C/2) hook

■ A 3.5mm (US E/4) hook

■ Thick card, 21cm long

TENSION

Triangle measures 9cm (3 in) across each side after blocking

NOTES

Poncho is made of 18 Hexagon Motifs and 1 Half Hexagon Motif. All Motifs are made from Triangles worked in rounds, which are joined together to create the shapes. You should refer to the Schematic below when making up your Poncho.

TRIANGLE MOTIF MAKE 111

Using a 3.5mm hook and Banana, ch4 and ss to first ch to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as a tr throughout) 4tr into loop, ch2, (5tr, ch2) twice into loop, ss to top of beg ch-3 to join, turn. [15 tr, 3 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

Join Rose in any ch-2 sp.

Round 2 (WS) Ch3, (2tr, ch2, 3tr) in same ch-sp, *tr in each st to next ch-2 sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in ch-2 sp; rep from * once more, tr in each st to end, ss to top of beg ch-3, turn. [33 tr, 3 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

Join Bubble in any ch-2 sp.

Round 3 As Round 2. [51 tr, 3 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

Join Ice in any ch-2 sp.

Round 4 Ch1 (does not count as a st), *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch-sp, dc in each st across to next ch-sp; rep from * two times more, ss to top of beg dc. [69 dc, 3 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off.

HEXAGONS MAKE 18

Using Ice, whipstitch 6 Triangles together to form a Hexagon.

SIZE 8 10 ONLY

With RS facing, join Citrus in any st on outside of Hexagon.

Round 1 (RS) Ch2 (counts as a htr throughout), *htr in each st to ch-2 sp, htr in ch-sp, ch1, htr in next ch sp; rep from * around, ss to top of beg ch-2. [150 htr, 6 ch-1 sps]

Fasten off.

ALL OTHER SIZES

With WS facing, join Citrus into any st on outside of Hexagon.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3, *tr in each st to ch-2 sp, tr in ch-2 sp, ch1, tr in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ss to top of beg ch-3, turn. [150 tr, 6 ch-1 sps]

SIZES 16 18, 20 22 AND 24 ONLY

Round 2 Ch1, dc in each st to ch-1 sp, (dc, ch1, dc) in ch-1 sp; rep from * around, ss to top of beg dc, turn. [162 dc, 6 ch-1 sps] Repeat Round 2 a further -(-: 0: 1: 2) times.

ALL SIZES

Fasten off.

HALF HEXAGON MAKE 1

Using Ice, whipstitch 3 Triangles together to form a Half Hexagon.

SIZE 8 10 ONLY

With RS facing, join Citrus in first ch-sp after long edge.

Round 1 (RS) Ch2, htr in same sp, *htr in each st to next ch-sp, htr in ch-sp, ch1, htr in next ch-sp; rep from * once more, htr in each st to next ch-sp, 2htr in ch-sp, 1htr in each st and ch-sp across long edge, ss to top of beg ch-2.

[125 htr, 2 ch-2 sps]

ALL OTHER SIZES

With WS facing, join Citrus in first ch-sp after long edge.

Round 1 (WS) Ch4 (counts as tr and ch1), tr in same sp, *tr in each st to next ch-sp, tr in ch-sp, ch1, tr in next ch-sp; rep from * once more, tr in each st to next ch-sp, (tr, ch1, tr) in ch-sp, 1tr in each st and ch-sp across long edge, ss to top of beg ch-3. [125 tr, 4 ch-2 sps]

SIZES 16 18, 20 22 AND 24 ONLY

Round 2 Ch1, dc in each st to ch-1 sp, (dc, ch1, dc) in ch-1 sp: rep from * around, ss to top of beg dc, turn. [133 dc, 4 ch-2 sps] Repeat Round 2 a further -(-: 0: 1: 2) times.

ALL SIZES

Fasten off.

TO FINISH

Block each Motif to measuremen­ts stated. With RS facing, use Citrus to whipstitch the Motifs together using the Schematic on page 20.

NECK EDGING

Using a 2.5mm hook, join Citrus to any st at back of neck.

Row 1 (RS) Ch1, dc in each st around neckline, ss to beg dc, turn.

Row 2 (WS) As Row 1.

Row 3 Ch3, tr in each st around, ss to top of beg ch-3.

Round 4 As Round 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

LOWER EDGING

Using 3.5mm hook, join Citrus in any stitch around lower edge.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to beg dc.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TASSELS MAKE 57

Using Citrus and your piece of card, make 57 Tassels and secure evenly around lower edge.

Nothing says fun times more than this headband by Emma Leith.

■ Scheepjes Whirlette (60% cotton, 40% acrylic, 100g/455m), 1 ball of each: Banana (858), Ice (860), Bubble (866), Rose (859), Citrus (864)

■ A 4mm (US G/6 hook)

■ Craft feathers

■ Headband, 5cm wide

■ 24 sequins, 2cm diameter

NOTES

All parts are made separately, then joined to the headband at the end. Use two strands of yarn held together as one throughout. Do this by winding off a separate ball of each shade of yarn.

Slip stitches are not included in stitch counts unless otherwise stated.

Thread all sequins onto the double strand of Ice.

Using Ice, ch27.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [26 sts]

Rows 2-3 Ch1 (does not count as a st), dc in each st across, turn.

Row 4 Ch1 (does not count as a st), (dc in next 2 sts, sdc in next st) 8 times, dc in final 2 sts, turn.

Rows 5-7 As Row 2.
