PIKACHU AMIGURUMI
Catch the tiny but mighty star of Pokémon on your hook, if you can! By Sabrina Somers
When Pikachu meet, they touch their tails together and exchange electricity through them as a form of greeting. Now you can crochet your own icon of the famous
Pokémon brand.
NOTES
Pikachu is worked in the amigurumi style. Work stitches in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. You may find it useful to mark the first stitch of the round, moving the marker up as you work. Head and Body are worked in one piece, from the top down. The Arms, Legs, Tail and Ears are made separately.
There are templates on page 96, which you will need to use to cut the felt shapes.
PIKACHU
HEAD AND BODY
Using Sunglow, make a magic loop.
Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc in loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]
Round 3 (Dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]
Round 4 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [24 sts]
Round 5 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [30 sts]
Round 6 (Dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [36 sts]
Round 7 (Dc in next 5 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [42 sts]
Round 8 (Dc in next 6 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [48 sts]

Use felt pieces to make Pikachu’s eyes and cheeks, then embroider a nose and mouth
Rounds 32-40 As Round 10.
Round 41 Dc in first 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in next 6 sts, (dc2tog, dc in next st) 4 times, dc in next 6 sts, (dc2tog, dc in next st) twice, (dc2tog) twice, (dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog) 3 times, dc in final 3 sts. [54 sts]
Stuff toy, cont to stuff as you work.
Round 42 (Dc in next 7 sts, dc2tog) 6 times. [48 sts]
Round 43 (Dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog) 6 times. [42 sts]
Round 44 (Dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog) 6 times. [36 sts]

EARS (MAKE 2)
Using Noir, make a magic loop.
Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc in loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 Dc in each st around.
Round 3 (Dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [9 sts]
Round 4 As Round 2.
Round 5 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [12 sts]
Round 6 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [15 sts]
Change to Sunglow, carry Noir ready to pick up over the next round.
Round 7 Dc in first 3 sts, change to Noir, dc in
next 10 sts, change to Sunglow, dc in next 2 sts. Round 8 Dc in first 5 sts, change to Noir, dc in next 6 sts, change to Sunglow, dc in next 4 sts. Round 9 Dc in next 7 sts, change to Noir, dc in next 2 sts, change to Sunglow, dc in next 6 sts. Fasten off Noir only.
Rounds 10-18 As Round 2.
Round 19 (Dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog) 3 times. [12 sts]
Round 20 Dc in each st around, ss to beg dc to join.
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
FEET (MAKE 2)
Using Sunglow, make a magic loop.
Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc in loop. [6 sts]
Round 2 (Dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [9 sts]
Round 3 Dc in each st around.
Round 4 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [12 sts]
Round 5 As Round 3.
Round 6 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [15 sts]
Rounds 7-9 As Round 3.
Round 10 (Dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog) 3 times. [12 sts]
Round 11 (Dc2tog) 6 times. [6 sts]
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Thread tail through final round to close opening. Thread tail up to the top of the Feet, this will be used to sew the Feet to the Body later in the pattern.
ARMS (MAKE 2)
Using Sunglow, make a magic loop.
Rounds 1-2 (RS) As Round 1-2 of Head and Body. [12 sts]
Rounds 3-4 Dc in each st around.
Round 5 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [15 sts]
Rounds 6-9 Dc in each st around.
Round 10 (Dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog) 3 times. [12 sts]
Round 11 Dc in each st around.
Round 12 (Dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog) 3 times. [9 sts]
Round 13 Dc in each st around.
Round 14 (Dc in next st, dc2tog) 3 times. [6 sts] Fasten off leaving a long tail.
STRIPES (MAKE 2)
Using Brownie, ch17.
Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across. [16 sts]
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
TAIL (MAKE 2)
Using Sunglow, ch16.
Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [15 sts]
Row 2 Ch1, dc in each st across to final 2 sts, dc2tog, turn. [14 sts]
Row 3 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.
Rows 4-7 Rep Row 2-3. [12 sts at end of Row 7] Row 8 Ch1, dc in first 5 sts, turn leaving rem sts unworked. [5 sts]
Row 9 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn. [5 sts] Row 10 As Row 9.
Row 11 Ch1, dc in each st across, ch5, turn. Row 12 Dc in second ch from hook and next 3 ch, dc in next 5 sts, turn. [9 sts]
Rows 13-17 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 18 Ch1, dc in first 4 sts, turn leaving rem sts unworked. [4 sts]
Row 19 Dc in first st, change to Brownie, dc in next st, change to Sunglow, dc in next st, change to Brownie, dc in final st, turn.
Fasten off Sunglow only.
Row 20 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 21 Ch1, dc in next 4 sts, ch4, turn.
Row 22 Dc in second ch from hook and next 2 ch, dc in next 4 sts, turn. [7 sts]
Row 23 Ch1, dc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Place two Tail pieces on top of each other. Work a round of dc around edges of Tail pieces to join, working 3dc in each corner.
You do not need to stuff the Tail.
TO MAKE UP
Use the image as a guide when making up Pikachu.
Stuff the Ears and sew them over Rounds 8-11 of the Head.
Lightly stuff the Arms and sew at a right angle, either side of the Body.
Using a small amount of Sunglow, embroider a st over rounds 1-2 of Arms to form finger indentations.
Stuff the Feet and sew to the base of the Body. Sew the Stripes to the back of the Body, over Round 29 and Round 40.
Sew the Tail to the back, over Round 40. Using the Templates on page 96, cut out black, white and red circles of felt. Glue the felt to the face for the eyes and cheeks.
Using black stranded cotton, embroider the nose and mouth.
