There’s cracking good fun to be had collecting eggs as colourful as these beauties

Gather your pastel yarn scraps and whisk them together to make perfect eggs and teeny baskets that can be used for table decoration­s, hanging window displays, garlands… Easter is the time you should put all your eggs in one basket so go egg-streme with your creativity!

NOTES

Pattern is worked in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. You may find it helpful to mark the first stitch of the round, moving the marker up as you work. Pattern used an invdec (see Abbreviati­ons) but you could work a dc2tog instead, depending on your preference.

EGGS

BASIC EGG

This pattern makes a plain coloured egg, but if you’d like to make a striped egg, change colour at the end of each round.

Using a 2.75mm hook and any colour, make a magic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc in loop. [6 sts]

Round 2 (RS) 2dc in each st around.

[12 sts]

Round 3 (Dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 Dc in each st around.

Round 5 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 6 Dc in each st around.

Round 7 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [30 sts]

Rounds 8-13 Dc in each st around.

Round 14 (Dc in next 3 sts, invdec) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 15 (Dc in next 2 sts, invdec) 6 times. [18 sts]

Stuff the Egg.

Round 16 (Dc in next st, invdec) 6 times.

[12 sts]

Round 17 (Invdec) 6 times. [6 sts]

Fasten off.

Thread the tail through the final 6 sts, pulling tight to close.

Weave in ends.

TRIANGLE DESIGN EGG

Use any 3 colours. Colours will be referred to as Yarn A, B and C.

Using a 2.75mm hook and Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Rounds 1-3 (RS) As Rounds 1-3 of Basic Egg. [18 sts]

Change to Yarn B.

Round 4 (Dc in next st, change to Yarn C, dc in next st, change to Yarn B) 8 times, dc in next st, change to Yarn C, dc in next st.

Change to Yarn A.

Round 5 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [24 sts]

Change to Yarn B.

Round 6 (Dc in next st, change to Yarn C, dc in next st, change to Yarn B) 11 times, dc in next st, change to Yarn C, dc in next st.

Change to Yarn A.

Round 7 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [30 sts]

Round 8 Dc in each st around.

Change to Yarn B.

Round 9 (Dc in next st, change to Yarn C, dc in next 4 sts, change to Yarn B) 6 times.

Round 10 (Dc in next 2 sts, change to Yarn C, dc in next 3 sts, change to Yarn B) 6 times.

Round 11 (Dc in next 3 sts, change to Yarn C, dc in next 2 sts, change to Yarn B) 6 times.

Round 12 (Dc in next 4 sts, change to Yarn C, dc in next st, change to Yarn B) 5 times, dc in next 4 sts, change to Yarn C, dc in next st. Change to Yarn A.

Round 13 Dc in each st around.

Round 14 (Dc in next 3 sts, invdec) 6 times. [24 sts]

Change to Yarn B.

Round 15 *Dc in next st, change to Yarn C, dc in next st, change to Yarn B, invdec, change to Yarn C, dc in next st, change to Yarn B, dc in next st, change to Yarn C, invdec, change to Yarn B; rep from * twice more omitting final colour change. [18 sts]

Stuff the Egg.

Change to Yarn A.

Rounds 16-17 As Rounds 16-17 of Basic Egg.

Fasten off.

Thread the tail through the final 6 sts, pulling tight to close.

Weave in ends.

CHECKERBOA­RD EGG

Use any 2 colours. Colours will be referred to as Yarn A and B.

Using a 2.75mm hook and Yarn A, make a magic loop.

Rounds 1-2 (RS) As Rounds 1-2 of Basic Egg. [12 sts]

Change to Yarn B.

Round 3 *Dc in next st, 2dc in next st, change to Yarn A, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, change to Yarn B; rep from * twice more. [18 sts]

Round 4 (Dc in next 3 sts, change to Yarn A, dc in next 3 sts, change to Yarn B) 3 times.

Round 5 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, change to Yarn A, dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, change to Yarn B) 3 times omitting final colour change. [24 sts]

Round 6 Using Yarn A, dc in next 4 sts, change to Yarn B, dc in next 4 sts, (change to Yarn A, dc in next 4 sts, change to Yarn B, dc in next 4 sts) twice. [24 sts]

Round 7 (Change to Yarn A, dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, change to Yarn B, dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 3 times. [30 sts]

Rounds 8-9 (Change to Yarn A, dc in next 5 sts, change to Yarn B, dc in next 5 sts) 3 times. [30 sts]

Round 10 Using Yarn B, dc in next 5 sts, change to Yarn A, dc in next 5 sts, (change to Yarn B, dc in next 5 sts, change to Yarn A, dc in next 5 sts) twice. [30 sts]

Rounds 11-13 (Change to Yarn B, dc in next 5 sts, change to Yarn A, dc in next 5 sts) 3 times. [30 sts]

Round 14 Using Yarn A, dc in next 3 sts, invdec, change to Yarn B, dc in next 3 sts, invdec, (change to Yarn A, dc in next 3 sts, invdec, change to Yarn B, dc in next 3 sts, invdec) twice. [24 sts]

Round 15 (Change to Yarn A, dc in next 2 sts, invdec, change to Yarn B, dc in next 2 sts, invdec) 3 times. [18 sts]

Stuff the Egg.

Round 16 (Change to Yarn A, dc in next st, invdec, change to Yarn B, dc in next st, invdec) 3 times. [12 sts]

Change to Yarn A.

Round 17 (Invdec 6) times. [6 sts]

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Thread the tail through the final 6 sts, pulling tight to close. Weave in ends.

BASKET

Using a 2.75mm hook and any colour of Sirdar Happy Cotton, make a magic loop.

Round 1 Ch1, 6dc in loop. [6 sts]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts] Round 3 (Dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 (Dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 5 (Dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [30 sts]

Round 6 (Working in bl only) (dc in next 9 sts, 2dc) 3 times. [33 sts]

Round 7 (Spiked dc in next st, dc in next st) 16 times, spiked dc in next st.

Round 8 (Dc in next st, spiked dc in next st) 16 times, dc in next st.

Rounds 9-12 Repeat Rounds 7-8.

Round 13 Ss into each st around. [33 sts] Fasten off and weave in ends.

HANDLE

Using a 2.75mm hook and same colour used for Basket, ch23.

Row 1 (WS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [22 sts]

Rows 2-3 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Work all sts in Round 4 through the fl of sts from Round 3 and the opposite side of the foundation ch to form a tube.

Row 4 Ch1, ss in each st across.

Fasten off.

Sew the ends of the Handle to the sides of the Basket.
