EMBELLISH: CUSHION

Make your dull denim sparkle again in a star-struck cushion design by Emma Friedlander-Collins

-

Even the smallest bits of denim can have a second chance as a hexagon or triangle in this stellar piece of homeware. Keep it simple with o cuts from the same denim garment, or mix it up with lighter and darker washes.

NOTES

Cushion is made up of 2 pieces. The Back is made from a single square of denim and the front is made up of 23 Hexagons and 44 Triangles.

You will need approx 75x75cm of denim in total to cut shapes from. Each shape should be cut from the fabric using the Templates on page 96. Holes are punched around the edge of each shape and crochet borders are worked into the holes.

There is a Layout Diagram on page 96, which you should refer to when making up the front.

CUSHION FRONT HEXAGONS MAKE 23

Using the Template, cut 23 Hexagons from the scrap denim.

Using a leather punch, make holes around each shape as shown on the Template.

With RS of fabric facing you, join yarn in any corner of Hexagon with a ss.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st), (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner hole, 2dc in each hole to next corner; rep from * around, ss to beg dc. [72 sts, 6 ch-2 sps] Fasten off.

FRONT TRIANGLES (MAKE 44)

Using the Template, cut 44 Triangles from the scrap denim.

Using a leather punch, make holes around each shape as shown on the Template.

With RS of fabric facing you, join yarn in any corner of Triangle with a ss.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st), (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in corner hole, 2dc in each hole to next corner; rep from * around, ss to beg dc. [36 sts, 3 ch-3 sps]

Fasten off. JOIN SHAPES

Using the Layout Diagram on page 96, sew the shapes together to form the Front.

TO MAKE UP

Take the large piece of denim and lay flat with WS facing you. Fold over 10cm on both ends of the longer sides so piece measures 45x45cm. Place the Front on top of the back with RS facing you, lining up the zigzag edge with the folded edge on the back. You will need to fold in the edges of the Hexagons to the inside of the cushion cover.

Whipstitch the zigzag edges in place.

Use the leather punch to make 52 holes evenly across the top and bottom edge of back piece. With RS of back facing you, join yarn in first hole across top of back and work 2dc in each hole across. [104 sts]

Fasten off.

Repeat on the bottom edge and whipstitch the rows to the Front of the Cushion.

Weave in all ends.
