Packing your bag is fun with Natalie Beard’s bold design
Put a spring in your step on grey mornings with this colourfully patterned bag. It may even brighten someone else’s day too.
NOTES
Bag is made up of separate pieces, which are sewn together at the end. There is a Chart on page 95, which you will need to refer to when making the Main Body. Each small square represents 1dc. Read all rounds from right to left. Change colour on the final yrh of st before colour change is indicated. Carry the unused colour across the top of your sts, enclosing the strand as you work. The first few rounds have been written out to guide you.
BACKPACK BASE
Using Hot Pink, ch19.
Round 1 (RS) 5tr in fourth ch from hook, tr in next 14 ch, 6tr in last ch, turn to work in opposite side of foundation ch, tr in next 14 ch, ss to top of beg ch-3. [40 sts]
Round 2 Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in st at base of ch-3, 2tr in next 5 sts, tr in next 14 sts, 2tr in next 6 sts, tr in next 14 sts, ss to top of beg ch-3. [52 sts]
Round 3 Ch3, tr in st at base of ch-3, 2tr in next 11 sts, tr in next 14 sts, 2tr in next 12 sts, tr in next 14 sts, ss to top of beg ch-3. [76 sts]
Round 4 Ch3, 2tr in next st, (tr in next st, 2tr in next st) 11 times, tr in next 14 sts, (tr in next st, 2tr in next st) 12 times, tr in next 14 sts, ss to top of beg ch-3. [100 sts]
Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew to Main
Body.
MAIN BODY
Using Mod Green, ch100 and ss in last ch from hook (being careful not to twist the ch).
Round 1 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each ch around, ss to beg dc. [100 sts] Rounds 2-3 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to beg
dc. Fasten off.
Join Black in any st, carry White from first st. Refer to the Chart for all colour changes.
Round 4 Ch1, *dc in next 2 sts, change to White, dc in next 2 sts, change to Black; rep from * 24 times more, ss to beg dc.
Fasten off Black and White.
Join Red in first st and carry Hot Blue.
Round 5 Ch1, (dc in next 9 sts, change to Hot Blue, dc in next st, change to Red) 9 times, dc in next 9 sts, change to Hot Blue, dc in next st (do not change to Red at end of round), ss to beg dc. Round 6 Ch1, dc in first st, (change to Red, dc in next 7 sts, change to Blue, dc in next 3 sts) 9 times, change to Red, dc in next 7 sts, change to Blue, dc in final 2 sts, ss to beg dc.
Rounds 7-15 Cont in patt set, referring to the
Chart. Repeat the Chart 5 times on each round.
Rounds 16-39 Rep Rounds 4-15 twice more. Fasten off all colours.
Join Black in first st.
Round 40 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to beg
dc. Fasten off.
Join White in first st.
Round 41 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to beg
dc. Fasten off.
Join Black in first st.
Round 42 Ch1, (8dc, ch2, skip 2 sts) 10 times, ss to beg dc. [80 sts, 10 ch-2 sps] Fasten off.
Join White in first st.
Round 43 Ch1, (dc in each st to ch-2 sp, 2dc in ch-sp) rep around, ss to beg dc. [100 sts] Fasten off.
Join Black in first st.
Round 44 Ch1, reverse dc around, ss to beg dc. Fasten off and weave in ends. DRAWSTRING
Using Hot Pink, ch120.
Ss in second ch from hook and each ch to end.
Fasten off and weave in end. FLAP
Using Hot Pink and leaving a long beg tail, ch41. Carry Sunshine throughout Flap.
Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and each ch
across, turn. [40 sts]
Rows 2-3 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn. Row 4 Ch1, dc in first 4 sts, (bobble in Sunshine, dc in next 4 sts) 7 times, dc in final st, turn. Row 5 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 6 Ch1, dc in first 7 sts, (bobble in sunshine, dc in next 4 sts) 6 times, dc in final 3 sts, turn. Row 7 As Row 5.
Rows 8-25 Rep Rows 4-7 another 4 times, then rep Row 4-5.
Row 26 Ch1, dc in first 20 sts, ch6, dc in next 20 sts, turn. [40 sts, 1 button loop]
Row 27 Ch1, dc in first 20 sts, 12dc in ch-6 sp, dc in next 20 sts. Fasten off.
STRAPS (MAKE 2)
Using Hot Blue and leaving a long tail, ch7.
Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and next 5 ch, turn. [6 sts]
Row 2 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.
Rep Row 2 until Strap measures 70cm.
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
TO MAKE UP
You can use the tails where possible when making up.
Whipstitch the Main Body around the Base. Sew the Flap to the back of the Main Body, over Round 40.
Sew the button to the front of the Main Body, in line with the button loop.
Thread the Drawstring through the ch-2 sps from Round 42.
Sew the Straps to the back of the bag, line up the bottom with Round 1 of Main Body and the top in line with the Flap.
Weave in all ends.
