MITTENS

Like a tub of Neopolitan ice cream, the chunky colour sections of these mittens by Sophie Minoughan are full of flavour

■ Scheepjes Stone Washed (78% cotton, 22% acrylic, 50g/130m), 1 ball of each: Amazonite (813), Corundum Ruby (808), Tourmaline (836) ■ A 4mm (US G/6) hook

TENSION

18 sts and 14 rows measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over htr st using a 4mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension

ABBREVIATI­ONS

spiked htr Yrh, insert hook in st indicated (2, 3 or 4 rows below), yrh and pull loop up to height of current row, yrh and pull through all loops on hook

NOTES

Mittens are worked from the Cuff up. The Cuff is worked in short rows and seamed together. The Main Body of the Mitten is worked in rounds from one long edge of the Cuff. The Thumb is worked at the end over a space left in the Main Body.

MITTENS CUFFS

Using Corundum Ruby, ch8.

Row 1 (RS) Htr in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [7 sts]

Row 2 Ch1 (doesn’t count as st throughout), htr in bl of each st to end, turn.

Rep Row 2 until Cuff measures 18 (19: 20)cm.

With WS facing, line up final row with Row 1 and ss together.

Do not fasten off.

MAIN BODY

Turn so RS is facing, and work around the circumfere­nce of the Cuff.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, work 30 (32: 34)htr evenly around Cuff, ss to the beg htr. [30 (32: 34) sts]

Round 2 (RS) Ch1, htr in first 7 (8: 8) sts, 2htr in next st, htr in next 14 (15: 16) sts, 2htr in next st, htr in next 7 (7: 8) sts, ss to beg htr.

[32 (34: 36) sts]

Round 3 Ch1, htr in each st around, ss to beg htr.

Rounds 4-5 As Round 3.

Round 6 Ch1, htr in first 8 sts, 2htr in next st, htr in next 15 (16: 17) sts, 2htr in next st, htr in final 7 (8: 9) sts, ss to beg htr. [34 (36: 38) sts] Change to Tourmaline.

Round 7 Ch1, *htr in next st, spiked htr 3 rows below, htr in next st, spiked htr 2 rows below, htr in next st, spiked htr 4 rows below, (htr in next st, spiked htr 3 rows below) twice, htr in next st, spiked htr 2 rows below, htr in next st, spiked htr 4 rows below, htr in next st, spiked htr 2 rows below**, htr in next st, spiked htr 3 rows below; rep from * to ** once more, ss to beg htr for size S only, htr in next st, spiked htr 3 rows below, ss to beg htr from size M only, htr in next st, spiked htr 2 rows below, ss to beg htr.

Round 8 Ch1, htr in each st around, ss to beg htr. Rep Round 8 another 3 (3: 4) times.
