How do I work two treble stitches together?

Here’s the easy way to make a tr2tog…

-

You can work a tr2tog anywhere in your fabric so hook your trebles to the point where you want to place the decrease – you’ll work it over the next two stitches. Step 1 Start the next treble as usual, so yrh and insert hook into top of next stitch.

Step 2 Yrh and pull up a loop.

Step 3 Yrh and pull through 2 loops. Pause here and you should have 2 loops on the hook. Step 4 Before finishing that first treble, start the next treble. So yrh and insert the hook into the top of the next stitch.

Step 5 Yrh and pull up a loop.

Step 6 Yrh and pull through the first 2 loops only. Pause here and you should have 3 loops on the hook. Take a look at your fabric – you’ll have made two partial treble stitches, without finishing either of them.

Step 7 Now you can finish the two partial trebles together – this step joins the two posts or stems and creates the one top section. Yrh and pull through all the loops on the hook. You will have worked two stitches together and created the upside-down V-shape tr2tog decrease stitch with one top section. You can complete the row as instructed in your pattern and then check your stitch count. The stitch count of a decrease row like this can be a little confusing if you usually count stitch stems rather than stitch tops. My advice is to practise counting the tops instead of the stems, or make sure you count a decrease stitch as one stem not two.

Step 8 When you turn and work the next row, make sure you work one stitch into the one top section of the decrease stitch.

Tip Sometimes you might see ‘tr3tog’, which means work three treble stitches together. To do this, repeat Steps 4-6 (you should have 4 loops on the hook) before working Step 7. Tip Creating a decrease at the start of a treble row is slightly different. Work ch2 instead of the usual ch3 and then treble into the next stitch – this counts as a tr2tog. On the next row, treat the top of the treble as the top of the tr2tog and ignore the ch2 (this doesn’t count as a stitch). Easy!
