12 sts and 7 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over treble crochet using a 5.5mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension

The Central Section is worked in rows from the base up. Additional rows are worked from both the left and right side of the Central Section. Slip stitches are not included in the stitch counts.

SHAWL CENTRAL SECTION

Ch4. Row 1 (WS) 6tr in fourth ch from hook, turn.

Row 2 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in st at base of ch-3, (tr in next st, 3tr in next st) twice, tr in next st, 2tr in final st, turn. [13 sts]

Row 3 Ch4 (counts as dtr throughout), dtr in st at base of ch-4, dtr in next 3 sts, 3tr in next st, pm in second tr of 3-tr group, tr in next 3 sts, 3tr in next st, pm in second tr of 3-tr group, dtr in next 3 sts, 2dtr in final st, turn. [19 sts]

Row 4 Ch4, dtr in st at base of ch-4, dtr in each st to maker, 3tr in marked st, move marker to second tr of 3-tr group, tr in each st to next marker, 3tr in marked st, move marker to second tr of 3-tr group, dtr in each st to final st, 2dtr in final st, turn. [25 sts]

Rows 5-21 As Row 4. [127 sts]

Do not fasten off.

RIGHT HAND SIDE EXTENSION

Row 22 (RS) Ch4, dtr in st at base of ch-4, dtr in next 35 sts, tr in next 3 sts, htr in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts, ss in next st, turn leaving rem sts unworked. [46 sts]

Row 23 (WS) Skip ss, ss in next 3 sts, ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in next 3 sts, htr in next 3 sts, tr in next 3 sts, dtr in each st to final st, 2dtr in final st, turn. [44 sts]

Row 24 Ch4, dtr in st at base of ch-4, dtr in each st to final 12 sts, tr in next 3 sts, htr in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts, ss in next st, turn leaving rem sts unworked. [42 sts]

Row 25 As Row 23. [40 sts]

Rows 26-35 Rep Rows 2-25 another 5 times. [20 sts at end of Row 35] Fasten off.

LEFT HAND SIDE EXTENSION

Join yarn in top of beg ch-4 from Row 21. Work as Right-Hand Side Extension; please note that the RS and WS rows will be reversed.

Do not fasten off.

EDGING

Begin Edging across the top-straight edge.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 187dc evenly across top edge, 3dc in corner, pm in second dc of group, 190dc across curved edge of Shawl, 2dc in corner, pm in last st, ss to beg dc, turn. [382 sts]

Row 2 (WS) Ch1, dc in first marked st, (ch3, skip 1 st, tr in next st, ch3, 5tr around post of prev tr, skip 1 st, dc in next st) rep across to marker, dc in marked st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
